Yes I think you're right - just sitting there it may not appear right away, when driving it will begin leaking shortly after the rain begins.

So no leak found - they run hoses over the top they said and I mentioned its best to drive and have the car flexing/moving water in the channels.

Also I think the freezing temps and then the warming and back to freezing is poking more holes in any sealant used - if its not good stuff it cant hold up.

So now even if its raining and leaking and I drive in to the service bay they still may not see anything - its tough-its a small leak and possibly the sealant is still "whole" on the seam, but is separating slightly when the car is moving, expanding a bit and contracting a bit, and only a bit of water is going down into the area above the 3rd row seatbelt then being wicked down the belt.
The service techs are looking for a drip from what I gather, and its not leaking like that.
&uckin A this is going to be a PIA...

That's a bummer. I went to my dealer in a driving rainstorm on purpose so I could show them the leak down the third row seat belt which left drops behind the seat and the service tech said he did not even need to see it, took my word for it and did the fix I mentioned above.

Like I posted, passed the car wash test, but waiting for it to warm up for a real rain test. 10 inches of snow expected Monday, but that has not been a problem. It's the rain once you start driving, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed they got it and their "water guy" they contract out seemed confident.

Add me to the list!!!! Took my Explorer to the dealership Saturday with phone pics of the water coming down the seatbelt. He said he had never heard of this happening. They took it apart and said it was a factory weld had come apart.
They had to send it to a body shop.
Today I picked up a rental, and he said he will update me tomorrow by noon. He said there was a lot of talking back and forth with Ford about quality control.

I'm wondering how long this will take and I also wondering if I need to just trade it in? The carpet was soaked off and on for several weeks before I realized what was going on.
IF this gets fixed, what do you guys think? Luckily, I"m under factory warranty.

Were you able to see or tell what they actually took apart?

It appears ours has been fixed. They found the leak in the windshield seal, right at the top in front of the overhead console. Had the explorer for 2 weeks  but at least it isn't leaking anymore. the leak had also found its way down the pillar in the drivers side footwell so we had a swimming pool in the Explorer while we were skiing in the Rockies- thankfully the maintenance crew at the hotel let us use their shop-vac. Also found two faulty sensors causing the error codes for the cross traffic and blindspot assist. Disappointed they only cleaned the headliner and didn't replace it considering it was caked with nastiness.

Immediately took it through the carwash with no drama, so I guess I will consider this case closed now. Total shop time since new in December- 3 weeks. Only 4000KM on it. Hopefully we are over the bumps and my wife can just enjoy the silly thing now.

2014 ford explorer serious water leaks???wtf

So I bought a new explorer 2 months ago now. We get a couple nice days so I decided to give a wash. To my surprise a few gallons(no exaggeration) of water seeped in through the fire wall and saturated my drivers front and rear carpets.called the dealer they said bring it in on thursday.come thursday i went to drop off the truck however the temp dropped down to 20 degrees so the carpet turned to solid ice. on Friday they had a leak specialist come in to fix it and was told they would need the truck for the weekend to get it dried and treated to prevent any mold.(why not replace the carpets?) On monday they said they would need it til Wednesday. Tuesday they call say come get it tomorrow morning and it will be done. I call Wednesday morning to confirm they say come get it.i go there open the truck carpets are still soaked.told them I want the carpets replaced and left vehicle there.i call ford corporate im pissed now. 1st ford has no quality control in production of this vehicle now I dont even know if the dealer is competent enough to fix the problem.built ford tough sounds pretty weak right now. And im gonna be left wondering and worrying about any future problems such as electrical and computers that all sit inside the firewall not to mention mold. I want ford to buy it back or replace it think im nuts ??? How do you allow vechiles to leave the factory without noticing a major water leak? Whose doing the quality control at ford?a blind monkey could have found this leak.im scared I bought a lemon and im gonna get stuck paying for a beat truck.thanks ford I appreciate it.way to justify your over inflated union salaries and car prices

Welcome to the Forum jmazzeo08753.:wavey:
As per my PM, I have merged your thread with this one with many other frustrated members. I doubt that Ford will take it back without you suffering a huge loss on it. From what I gather, the problem was identified and repaired (supposedly). As long as the interior is totally dried out there shouldn't be any lasting issues. I seriously doubt water will have any effect on the carpeted mats as they will likely get wet from time to time anyway. I hope that they did get fixed right the first time and that you won't have to worry about it any more. Good luck.

Finding 3rd row seatbelt drivers side water leaks

...cant find the leak...not sure what was done except car is under a small waterfall type deal in the shop. keeping it Sat too but looks like a bust.

Its a nice facility-spotless-new and huge, counter reps keep everyone up front away from shop and parts...

oh well got the turn signal stalk replaced too.

So I washed the car and it dripped a bit and when I got home I did the usual;
-wipe/dry the bottom of all the doors;(wait till i post those pics-some info there too)
-wipe/dry the inside of the tailgate,...
-check for leak, saw some water and looking at tailgate open, I removed the wire insulation and looked in.
-Since my leak (see earlier post with pics) I 1st saw dribbling down the rear drivers side 3rd row speaker, I measured the angle and realized that a leak from the roof rail area or hinges is maybe too high.

Eyeballing it and looking in the wire hole, I can see the edge of the headliner,
and just below that, the top of the speaker.
But I need to see the bottom of the speaker as this is where water pools enough to wick down the seat belt.
So I know there is some water just below my line of sight.

How can I get a pic of this? There must be a cheap cam on a line I can get that I can stick in there?
They cant find it in the dealership but they are not doing this for sure.

Notice the wet wire hole - there was a tad bit of water inside the wire insulation. I doubt there should be any water in it, and wtf would it come from?

So if I can get something in there that will take a pic of that area of the speaker after a car wash, I bet I find water.
Maybe the window seals leak. Or the tailgate has water running around it via water channels and its getting into the wire insulation and dripping down onto the bottom of the speaker/seatbelt roll?

If the leak is coming down the third row seatbelt, that happened in my case and the leak came from the last roof rail not being properly sealed to the frame and was an easy fix for my dealer who has a good "water guy" - an independent guy who specializes in this.

Some water getting in the liftgate may or may not be the source of the leak.

Have you had the roof rail above the leak removed, resealed from the outside and put back on with the liner also being pulled down in that area and also sealed from inside?

That fixed it for me. Took the dealer "water guy" about 25 minutes.

They didnt find anything, I dont think they removed anything to see or do any work on it. All they did was run a hose over it.
Waiting to bring it in again.
If I can take a pic of any water inside that area it would be something to return with, as the car wash will get it leaking.

Can't say much for your dealer. I took my Ex to my dealer in a driving rainstorm so they could see the leak and they just took my word for it without looking, the service guy was familiar with that type of leak, scheduled me to come in when their "water guy" came in and and he fixed it in a jiff under warranty.

So I will give props to Pacifico Marple Ford in Broomall/Springfield just outside Philly.

Maybe you can have your service dept. contact theirs for some tips....

the dealer...not so much...:D (but the actual service work seems fine)

I'll add this to my list of issue with the explorer.
Today I noticed that on the driver side at the very back cargo area, there was a small puddle of water, also on the rearmost driver side third row cup holder and trickling down the seat belt. I wonder if it's coming through the rear quoter glass sealant or if it's coming through the roof rack attachment to the roof.
I am out of warranty, so I guess it's "my issue" now....

look in the roof liner with a dental mirror and a camera.
pop the hatch arm seal and look in there, see pics below.

You can see your leak area barley if you look in there.
If its leaking when you look in there and try try try to snap a pic,
water will show easily.

Most likely a cracked weld along the roof and quarter panel, very common with these POS

I noticed that the soft/pliable bonding material between the quarter panel and the roof shows some very small cracks. This area is at the very back of the roof, right as the seam starts turning downwards. So when I open the hatch, I can see this cracked sealant. I might start there by adding some silicone to plug those cracks.

Has FORD addressed this issue?
OK, I can understand my vehicle having this problem, because it was a very early MY2011 for a brand new platform. But to read in this post that MY2013 are STILL having this issue really sucks and speaks poorly of how FORD is addressing and implementing continuous improvement techniques to it's design / manufacturing process ! :thumbdwn::mad::(:fire:

Where was the leak situated on your Explorer?

2011 Explorer XLT roof leak??

I just purchased a used 2011 Explorer XLT with 21000 miles on it and panoramic roof. It came off of lease and had a clean Carfax (even though Carfax does not tell you the whole story). The day after I purchased it I noticed water sloshing around on the second row floor. Sure enough there was small puddle sitting on the floor. Does anyone know of any leak issues with this year Explorer and/or its panoramic roof?

Welcome aboard DelSil. :wavey:
As mentioned in my PM, I have merged your thread with this one on the same topic. Most talk about water coming in through the back and down the 3rd row seat belts. I don't believe I've read a post similar to yours though. Your XLT is still under warranty so go back to the dealer with it and have them check it out. You can also still purchase a Ford ESP warranty for it if you wish. I would suggest that you also check the spare tire wheel well for signs of water/moisture.
Good luck.

Hi DelSil,

As Peter recommended, I suggest returning to your dealership so they can perform an inspect. Let us know how you make out; if you need my help following your appointment, PM me with your info and I'll see what I can do to assist. Be sure to include your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and servicing dealership.

Crystal
