The intake has to come off to fit the updated external screwin tensioner which is part of the timing chain job.
The intake is dry.
The rattle may be due to a weak spring in your old external tensioner. Ford upgraded this part, and fitted them to engines with start up rattle under warranty.but I believe this is a bandaid measure. Others may not agree. I don't know.
It may work for a while but the cassette is badly designed as is the crank to jackshaft chain tensioner. The type of plastic they used is questionable on all parts and has been changed.
How bad is the rattle? The engine can drown out the sound when driving. Listen when you drive if you think it's pinging 99% it's not, it's your timing chain, listen between gear shifts when the revs change, tunnels and sound barrier walls on hwy's or fwy's help the sound become more audible.
If you hear it do both jobs.
If your sure it's coming from the front then you can do just the front and pray for the back.
