My buddie was wanting to lock the front and rear of his 97 f150. What are the axels he has?? I always thought the trucks came with 9" rears , but his has a cover, and I was thinking that the Ford 9" had no cover, just a 3rd member. His front obviosly is IFS. Thanks;)

i think it's a ford 8.8 inch in the rear. And it could be a dana 44 ifs front axle

31 Spline 8.8 rear, Reverse cut 8.8 front.

To much misinformation going around... Since you didn't say what engine it has I'm going to give you the figures for the 5.4L engine...

The front is a Reverse Cut 8.8 just like Jason said... But the rear is a 9.75"...

Now if its not the 5.4L and you still need to know a better place to go is http://ftw.truckmoxie.com/
that site started out as just an F 150 site and has evolved to include all Ford Trucks...

Jason, I think (not positive) that they did put the 8.8 in some of the F-150's but only the V6's which I don't believe are very common...

I used to have a '98 f-150 4x4 4.6L and I know it had the 8.8 inch in the rear, I crawled under and read the tag on the diff, and now that i think more about it, i remember that it did have the 8.8 in the front too. sorry about saying it had a dana 44

the rear is a 9.75" only if you have the 5.4L engine, the front should be the 8.8" regardless, its reverse cut.

Matt's right. Only with the 5.4 do you get the big 9.75 axle. The 4.6 and 4.2 get the 8.8 rear.
