loaded question.

Depends on what its going in, what type of music you listen to, your budget, and the type of sub.

Personally I prefer a SEALED enclosure.
However I recently built a ported enclosure for my boat, because of the application it needs all the help it can get.......

I always build my own, there is no other way to save $$$ and make it fit and look custom, but then I have built a hundered enclosures, so.....its up to you.

I(we) listen to all types of music. From rap to rock to spanish to soul to the stuff they play over in IRAQ

My budget. I can spare anywhere from $1.00 to $149.99

These are 2 12"inch Sony subs. These are gonna go in my girls ride which is a, well you guessed it, a Ford Explorer, 99 model

Like fortune said....it depends on the application

for most music sealed is the best.....you have to match the sub and amp for the box....thats the best way to get the best sound is to match everything. that includes the sub to the box...size and shape...for instance the larger sound stage you have (space for the sound to travel in) the more air you need to move to make the bass. the other variable you need to look at is accuracy of bass....the smaller the sub the more accurate it is because there is less moving weight for the magnet to move....but you also have to compare the frequency responce between different models of the same size....the wider the range the better the accuracy. another variable related to accuracy is the the RMS power handling of the sub, this is a more important # than the max wattage because this is the power it can handle sustained. that is also the # you want to match to the RMS of the amp you use

thats just kindof a touch on the subject.....and to sum it all up you just have to match everything

Also, I was at the sound shop today, and they have the sony demo Focus (that ugly green one) with 6 of those pentagonal subs in it, and that **** was so damn loud, it sounded like 2 12W7s. That being said, don't just pick a box because they look cool or anything, carefully read and consider what the manufacturer recommends, because they spend thousands finding out what the best size to use it, and try to find out your space availibilty.

After that, its all taste of sound and price range.

that was funny, how you compared six of sony's subs to 2 jl's........

Please. Two 12W7s have about 750rms power handling each in a single 3 ohm voice coil. Those sony subs 350 watts a peice max. The JL subs should easily out-do sony's because sony makes a pretty crappy sub IMHO, but the install that sony had (and the fact that the probably had choice subs) made their demo car screamingly loud.
By the way, I just installed two AH120Q audiobahns in a .8 cuft box with an A1500HCX, its really good sounding.
Just do it right.

bandpass boxes are nice but i hear they tend to blow speakers easy. but thats just a myth i heard

Bandpass boxes are very frequency specific and more expensive, harder to build, and consume more space. They also seem to blow more speakers because you cannot hear distortion nearly as easily if at all because of the chamber design. It may seem like bandpass boxes are good for nothing, but then again, they have very good output characteristics.

yea and they only sound good with rap that has sloppy bass.......sealed is the best way to go for "all around" sound....or a well researched and made ported box will do good if you cant afford a higher power sub.

actually nweibley, i was thinking the same thing....i know that there is no way a sony sub can keep up to them.....so dont jump down my throat dude.....i just thought it was funny......
