91 sport 5spd / 3.73 gears / 73K miles

I average 16MPG

when i got my explorer it only got like 9 to 10 mpg and blew alot of black stuff (smoke) out of the pipe... i replaced the maf with a used on and now it gets about 14-15 mpg and no smoke.. what else can be done to improve on this and my performance... the truck seems to be low on power too... any advise will help.. thanks

17-19 w/ less highway under 65mph

14 highway over 65mph

14 town/20 hwy if I'm lucky

Right now I'm getting about 18 city and only 21 freeway with a 5 speed, 3.73's and 4x4.

4x4, 5spd, 31s w/ 3.27s, 4.0 OHV

I get about 14-15 around town. It sounds bad (and it isn't that great) but there are a couple of big things. First, it's an Explorer, with gears too high for the tires I run, and I'm not easy on the throttle = can't expect the mileage of a 4cyl car. ;) The other thing is I tow a trailer about 30-40 miles per week and it's in 4x4/4 low about 20-30 minutes per week, or more if I'm lucky. So if you filter out all of the things that kill mileage (towing, 4x4, etc), and I were to just drive to and from school or something on a tank, my mileage would be pretty decent. :)

15-16 city 18-19 highway

I get unlimited gas milage...considering I haven't driven it in weeks. Just sits in the garage.

'92 w/ 3.73 LSD and A4LD.
Was getting about 11 city / 18 highway when I first got it. Did tune-up, injector cleaning, realignment, changed to synthetic engine oil and a bunch of minor stuff. I am now up to about 14 city / ~20 highway. I still have some more to do so I am hoping to top out at at least 16 city (where most of my miles are).

4x2 with 164k 3.08's auto trans. i get 19mpg in the city. not sure what it would get on the highway. i rarely every get it out of the city. it really needs a tune up, so it would probably do a little better.

18mpg @ 70mph all highway/2 lane blacktop (with a/c on)..
No idea on city driving, I don't drive in town much at all.

4.0 ohv, 2.5" exhaust, 4.10 gears, 32" tires, 700r4 trans.

92 Auto with 3.27's

gets about 18 to 19 mixed city/highway

about 20 to 21 on highway at 70 :)

94 4x4 3.73 32's 12mpg in town and 14-16mpg on freeway

94xlt, 31x10.5's, cone filter, not sure on gears, and moderate throttle usage and im getting 14 mpg city which im extatic about because for awhile i was getting 6 mpg , cleaned maf, did the tps mod and it doubled so i am happy with my current mpg. isnt that sad? lol

I just tanked up yesterday, these are my results...
93 explorer xl 4x4 (k&n filter, "swiss cheesed airbox")

16.28l/100km's or

19 mpg

the explorer chugs compared to my honda :thumbdwn: but compared to what some of the other people here are averaging I guess it could be worse... had a complete tune up done and alignment, tires balanced and at 34 psi. I also was granny-footing it around town, no highway mileage at all, just stupid stop and go city traffic. My city has stoplights every damn mile.

does the swiss cheese mod give much better gas milage???

I wish I could tell you but I bought the x and before I drove it for 10 feet I :
-did tranny flush
-rad flush
-replaced air filter with k&n drop-in
-"swiss cheesed the airbox"
-removed screen by MAF
-changed fuel filter
-oil/filter
-spark /plugs wires
-balance tires/alignment 34 psi

then I topped it up from dead empty, added some fuel injector cleaner and drove around town nice and easy and didn't floor it once and 19 MPG is what I mustered.

91, 4x4 3.73's

Right now I probably get around 12MPG overall (my tank seems to read about a 1/8th short once you get around a quarter tank though).... It hasnt had a tune-up in forever, tranny hasnt been serviced in forever, and it needs an alignment badly.

I have a flowmaster 50 series cat-back sitting here, probably gonna get custom intake, and new tires and wheels are going on in the next month and a half.

After all that and a tune-up/alignment and transmission check (all to be done within next 2 weeks) I hope to get around 15-16 mpg.

92, 4x4, 3.73lsd, auto, 169k

On the last tank of gas it took 17.8 gallons and i only went 224 miles. Thats about 12.5MPG, however I only drive about 4 miles each way to and from school. Trips that short barely allow the explorer to reach full opperating temp, so i am almost always running pig rich for the warmup cycle. When I do venture out onto the freeways its LA so i have to do 70-75 so i dont get run over by everyone else.

Back when all i did was hwy miles i could easily get 19-22mpg.
