What kind of mileage is your 3rd gen getting?

We just put nearly 2800 miles on our '03 4.0 3.73 4x4, averaging the entire trip we ended up with just over 19 mpg. The best tank was in the 21 mpg range worst was around 12(a lot of playing in the sand hills of NC on that tank)

Seems like I am pretty lucky after reading some posts on here. Took a 1200 mile trip and got 24mpg. it was all freeway and mostly cooler air night driving, kept it around 70 most of the time but this still seems pretty good to me. 4wd 3.55 gears and all stock except for a K&N filter.

2003 Explorer 4.0 mileage

We just picked this one up about 1,000 miles ago and we are averaging 17 town and 22 highway on regular gas. Don't understand why anyone would put premium gas in this engine and I never burn alcohol, save that for personal consumption. I've had higher performance engines, Infiniti and Audi and always use regular. This is good mileage for a 4x4 heavy vehicle in my opinion.

i just took a 1,500 mile round trip (nearly all interstate driving) and got around 20 mpg with half mountain and half rolling hills terrain. I was doing around 70 mph on the interstates. I was pleased with it. Around town I get anywhere from 15-17 but a high number of short trips on a tank really hurts gas mileage. If I keep the highway speeds to 55-60 mph I can get 22-24 mpg. My truck has 4.6L, 4WD and 3.73 LS gears.

2002 4.0 v 6 awd with 3.73 with 263000 miles we get 16.1 in the city and 21.1 on the high way at 70 mph with 245 75 16 tires

02 4.6 awd with tow package. I was averaging 18.5 all summer (mostly highway) but it appears winter blend is already making its way in our tanks in Rhode Island. The last two weeks I've been down to 17.

mpg

04 XLT tow package 3.73 LS 4.0 wheels 17" - city 14 hwy 19 - averages between 15 and 17 -AC always on, hot here in FL

Just bought it last month, 106k - gas milelage is bad in my opinion. I sold a 2000 XLT 4.0 that always averaged 20 mpg.

I am trying a few tricks to see if i can improve it. Higher (36) tire pressure, changed air filter, running a can of Seafoam to clean injectors - we'll see.

03 XLT 4.0

Between 32 and 35 highway and 14 - 16 city (AC always on).

3.73L rear, 4x2 and 5r55s. 95 000 miles

Everythings stock down to the oil I use. I do use Lucas upper cylinder lube but only for the past 2 tanks

04 limited with 4.6 with K&N CAI and magnaflow 18 inch muffler with 3rd cat removed and 3.73's averages 15-17 city in the summer with windows down NO AC 19-22 highway with AC in summer and 14-16 city and 17-21 highway in winter

02 XLT. Took a road trip yesterday and put on 350 miles. Got 19.8 MPG. All stock except K&N filter that came on the truck when I bought it. In town still sucks at around 15.

my 03 4x4 4.0v6 gets me about 15city and 17hwy :/

03 4.0 2wd 305,000 miles sor far and it feels like it gets 17 up down towing or off and being pushed haha

02 Eddie Bauer 4.6 V8 4wd 3.55 gears open diff, creeping up on 216k miles gets about 13 city and cruising on the freeway I'll get about 18-19. Combined is 14.4 according to trip computer. It hasn't budged in weeks.

11 miles per gallon on average . Sucks but I drive very little. One fill up every 2 to 3 weeks..

05 XLT, 4x4, 4.6L, 3.73, 5R55S, 221K miles, non flex, gas has ~ 10% Ethanol, Detroit Truetrac limited slip differentials front and rear
