What kind of oil do you guys use to keep your Explorer running in tip-top shape?

Since the day I bought my ex with only 65k on it I have used Mobile 1 Full synthetic with the fram filter that will last 7500 miles. but I change my oil between 5-7k depending on how much I'm on the highway. I now have 104k on it in 2 yrs and it still runs like a clock.

I've been running Royal Purple full synthetic 10w-30 in my 5.0 for almost 10,000 miles with no problems. In a few weeks I'll be doing my 3rd oil change with Royal Purple. Great oil!

232K and running strong with nothing more than good old Valvoline dino oil!

Mobile 1 Synthetic, 10w-30. Every 6000 miles for the last 3 years.

Ryan

4- quarts of royal purple 5w-30,1-quart of lucas full synthetic oil stabilizer and a k & n oil filter.

5 quarts of royal purple 5-30, k&n oil filter.

I am currently running Amsoil Signature Series 0w30 (Dead Link Removed ) in my 4.0 SOHC. Prior to that I used Amsoil Series 2000 0w30 (Dead Link Removed ).

I use an Amsoil BMK13 Bypass filter system (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126111&highlight=bypass+oil+filter ) using an Amsoil EaO15 full flow filter (Dead Link Removed ) and an Amsoil EaBP90 Bypass filter (Dead Link Removed ).

I change the oil at OCIs of 30k miles backed up with UOA to insure the oil is still safe to use ( latest UOIA - http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=200647&highlight=30k+uoa ).

The truck has over 140k miles of the clock, has never need any oil to be added, and gets over 30 highway MPG.

Quality filtration in combination with quality synthetic oil is definitely the way to go.

aldive, I am very interested in this Amsoil By-Pass system. Getting 30MPG in an Explorer is awesome. But I have a couple questions about it. It looks easy, but really, how difficult is it to install and take care of? Would this work on my Explorer? And, why aren't more people doing this? haha

As you can see from the write up, the installation is straightfoward and relatively paineless ( http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126111&highlight=bypass+oil+filter ).

As far as taking care of it, there is nothing special required. Simply change the filters at what "you" feel as an appropriate interval. I also periodically check all the hoses and fittings for leaks or abrasion. Also, I pull samples to send to Blackstone Labs ( Dead Link Removed ) for UOA.

Would this work on my Explorer?

Indeed it would. Bypass filtration can be used on any vehicle ( or boat ).

And, why aren't more people doing this?

Beats the hell out of me. I presume many people have been brainwashed into the archaic 3k OCI and the fear of the unknown ( the science of a UOA ). I am in no doubt many think it costs too much too.

I am amazed that so many still use conventional oil. To each his/her own.

To answer your question, I really don't know why. However, I assure you I will never have a vehicle without a bypass system and quality synthetic oil.

Thank you aldive. I'm going to look into this deeper before I decide anything. But definately, I am going to keep this high up on my list on things to do. If there is anything else you would like to let me know about this, feel free to tell me.

How does the bypass filter system save you on gas? I'm just wondering.

Well you said you get 30 MPG, so I thought it helped you on gas mileage. My bad.

Theoretically, it is possible to increase mileage by some unmeasurable amount due to the oil's reduction friction by having less particulate matter in the flow.

I use bypass oil filtration because its the best way to filter oil and you can greatly extend the OCI safely.

Hmm. Well I'll still have to think about it. Right now it's sort of a tie between this or the exhaust.

But aldive, I used your advice on your "Quest for 30 MPG" on not driving the X like a race car, but just nice and easy. And I have to say it I noticed an increase in the use of gas.
