I have a '91 XLT 4x4...I am HOPEFULLY getting a new job come summer time in which I will be making a lot more money. Since I decided I'd rather have a nice apartment instead of a new ride I am going to do soemthing to my current ride (besides fixing it ALL the time!)

Any ideas? I don't want to make it super tall and an off road machine, but I want it to be different and nice. More or less offical looking/stock looking/classy.....i.e. chrome wheels with a minimal lift (if any) and nothing too tough looking.

Here is a pic...

how about starting w/ a BIG box of tampons and some make up?

j/k, you could lower it a little(and i mean a little) and put some cobra R's on.

or if you wanna go the other way(which i hope you do), why not a body lift and some 31's or 32's w/ a brushguard and some lights. you could save some money by not getting a susp. lift and put that towards some nicer wheels. GOOBER has a really nice lookin rig that is not to tall but has a classy appeal.-russel

I don't know what you should do, but you SHOULDN'T put clear light lenses on it. Clears and Explorers do not mix!

uhoh, those are fightin words. i could personally care less, but there's a lot of people on here who love their clear lights. but hey, everybody's entitled to their own opinion.

Chris- do you have any pictures of your rig? i can't help but laugh when i think about 31's w/ that much lift, considering you can run them stock. i would be interested to see it though. it may actually look pretty sweet, i have no room to talk. thanks man-russel

No, no pictures of my Explorer. I will someday if I ever find someone I know with a digital camera. As for the 31's, the superlift kit seemed to pull my front tires back toward the rear some (shortened my wheelbase - which I have noticed happened to Perry's Explorer too, I knew I wasn't the only one!). That gave my Explorer a pretty ridiculous "overbite" look and left me no room for 33's. Also, I don't have the money for new gears and the ARB I wanted, and the 3.55 gears I have aren't hardly enough to pull those with the puss of a 4L the Explorer has. If you think it looks funny with 31's (which it does kind-of), you should see it now that I have my stock 235/75R15's studs on for winter. That looks really stupid and it's almost embarrasing to drive around. Oh well though, as I get money and time, things will work out.

PS: clear lights are for imports

Olivesman, I just searched for pictures of your truck. I take it you're in the same situation as me, or did the search just not work right? I'd like to see your truck too.

no, i just sold my rig (1990 ford full size bronco EB w/ a 4" sky jacker softride and a 2" body w/ 35 Pro Comps and 35X14.5 SSR's) due to fuel consumption (8mpg). i got the explorer but not had the chance to modify due to the lack of profit from my stocks. i'm going to start w/ performance first though and then my suspension. i will post pictures of all my rigs when i get the explorer finished. do you have the extended radius arms? just wondering. i can't think of what would make your truck so short. don't worry about the stock tires. i road on my stock bronco 31's for 2 months w/ all that lift and 6" on a truck like that is a lot more than on these explores. it looked HUGE w/ tiny tires. good luck getting yours fixed-russel

p.s.-call and complain to super lift. they are pretty forgiving on a lot of stuff and will willingly send you new stuff. my buddy's springs just went bad on his ranger and they sent him an ENTIRE NEW LIFT!! no joke. it was actually the third they've sent him.

Thanks olivesman,

I kinda like the way it looks too. Not too tall, not stock, but it stands out in a crowd. Tough looking? Yeah, I think mine is sorta tough looking, but not too much. Come on Bradley, a 4" lift 32x11.5 tires and your set. You'll love it , I promise.

woa

alittle on the nasty side I guess? wow.. heh, well.. cac91, I know yer entitled to your opinion, but he does have a point.. a good bit of us have clears (me for instance) and I love em.. I'd never go back to those stock lenses.. IMO, grab ya a set of them bradley.. the corners too.. get some jamstrait LEDs for the taillights tho if you do.. the red incandescents fade too fast.. as far as other mods.. um, a 2" drop or so.. some nice 18" rims and a billet grille.. you should be streetin.. oh yea.. and some underbody neon ;) check my ride, I'm 99% street and 1% "offroad"

what is NEWBZ talking about? did somebody do something to upset him? sorry if it was me. -russel

GOOB- no problem man. i've always liked the way your truck looks. it's conservative but beefy.

Hey Bradley,
First thing I would do is call Summit Racing and get a cat back exhaust mod. It costs about $150.00 and adds about 15 hp and 20ft-lbs torque. I put one on my '92
Sport (manual tranny) and it made a HUGE difference. Even bumped my mileage up to about 21mpg.The exhaust on the old explorers is really restricted. Another low $$ performance mod would be a K&N airbox. If you have an auto, a Superchip might also help. If it's a stick, the chip really doesn't help much.

olives.. I beleive he was upset about the remark from cac91 about clear tails..

hrmm, how about a dash kit for the interior guys? I'm looking at one myself now but can't decided.. I want a molded kit.. but I want it in brushed aluminum.. they don't make such that I know of.. any ideas? carbon fiber? wood? I think carbon fiber would look great in bradley's truck.. heres a link for ya http://www.californiadesign.com/

thanks for the url gjarrett. I would love a molded aluminum kit, but one thing that is bothreing me is the fact that it sticks on to the original peices, or at least tahts what the instructions say. the picture of the explorer does not cover the lower segment of the console in anything.. it looks wrong.. I'm so picky lol

here is the picture they give on their site: Dead Link Removed

I found a company earlier today called california automotive design that had this kit: Dead Link Removed this kit is not real wood, but is an actual replacement textured bezel. I like that about it. I guess I'll find some zen between the two.. I've looked at this before, but stopped looking becayuse of these exact problems :P

If it was a remark about what I said about clear lights that led to the edited-off post, sorry. It is my opinion and I said it jokingly, though I guess you can't tell on the computer. Lighten up "Newbz"

WOW!!

Do I have to wear my body armor when I post a reply under this thread? What a debate over the clears! I have them on the rear of mine, and I like them. But it's different strokes for different folks, RIGHT? I think for the most part, we all have different ideas that in one way or another, benefits everyone by generating ideas for there own vehicles. Does anyone agree?

deep stuff man ;) hehehe I agree.. I beleive another way to say it is "to each his own" somethin like that

i think the first thing you need to do is throw some mud on the X. Go wheeling and see if its for you. If you don't like it, lower it, and make it a street machine. All and in all, the 91-94 look good lifted and the 95-01 look good lifted and lowered. IMO the 91-94 are too boxy to be lowered, but i have seen some that look ok. But hey, do what you want, you bought the damn thing, not me or anyone else on the board.

BTW, i want to know what newbz said. haha
