im trading my car for a 95 xlt 4x4 4 door tomorrow and want to know what i should look for?

it has 127k miles with the 4.0.

where i work i can get the trans pan gasket and filter, trans flush, fuel filter, fuel system cleaner, engine flush and oil change, front, rear diffs and transfer case D&R done for free.

i drove the truck, has a lil road noise, but drove straight and my dad said it rode better then his 05 xlt.

anything else i need to look out for with a higher mileage truck?

if it sounds good you should be ok.... i would watch out o nthe tranny though... they are weak in fords and sometimes flushing them can actually cause more damage than jsut leaving it alone.....

Personal opinion--for al; kinds of reasons I would avoid a '95

they are niether obd1, nor obd2, but rather a ngelectted stepchild with parts that will not interchange with a 94, or a 96--other than body panels.

Good advice- I'd personally say 1998 year model and up.

well, the only reason im getting the 95 is cause im trading my car for it. i can't afford anything newer and the trade is straight up.

id love to get a newer one, but my car is only worth $3k-$3500.

since no one wants to buy my car i have to look at trading. out of the 20 some people i emailed to trade none wanted to.

My 97 has been very reliable. I'm at 116k and although I'm not using it as a daily driver anymore it doesn't have any problems. I just got it smogged two weeks ago and it came through with flying colors.

97 was the first year for the 5R55E and full time 4wd (Auto, 4Hi, 4Lo)

What are you driving now?

3500 will get you a 98 with a v8 right here on the forum--
in fact-there are a few trucks here you could get for that much or even less--

I have a 96 with 161000ish miles on it and it runs just fine. The only reason I don't drive mine is because of the Gas milage. Other then that it starts right up everytime and doesn't seem to have anything wrong with it. I have expierenced what it is like to have a between car, and it's not fun when something breaks. I had a 95 S10. That was also a wierd year for those trucks. It's not impossible to fix, but not as easy as another year explorer. Either way, Explorers are great trucks and the people on this board can help when something breaks. It's very helpful. Good luck.

well, i got it.
did a fuel system cleaning(REALLY NEEDED IT!) and flushed the trans(fluid was black)
prolly over the next couple days ill get the pan gasket and filter on the trans replaced, fuel filter and an oil change.

other then that, its a really nice truck.

I have a 95 Limited and it has not been a problem for me. But I suggest that you do a thorough check of the ball joints and front wheel bearings. An occasional squeak as you go over even the slightes bump, like and expansion joint, is a telltale symptom. The ball joints tend to need attention at about the 100k mile mark and the front wheel bearings will either go on forever or need some TLC before the 150k mile mark. You will also note the usual Explorer ass drag as the rear leaf springs will begin sagging, especially to the drivers side. This could be adjusted a little with a torsion bar adjustment, but the only real fix is leaf replacement.

Just so you know if you ever want to put a Superlift lift kit on it will reqiure an expert welder. The rear torsion bar mounts are welded on instead of being bolted on like '96-'01.

i don't plan on lifting it.

had too many lifted trucks before and with a 5'3" tall wifey and a 1 yr old, i don't see them getting into another lifted truck.

for now its my daily till i can afford aftermarket stuff.
i plan on just lowering the front and adding 20s to it. painting the grey trim white.
i don't want to lower it too far cause ill be putting the stockers back on in winter for the 4 wheel drive and in the summper i don't want it sitting in the air on the 20s and looking like crap.
