Hi All
I have had this thing since 2000 and it currrently only has 89,000 on it.it was in storage for awhile. The plan is to get something better on fuel but this is no clunker to trade in. Would like to jack it up and make something for camping. not to extreme but want it to look good (rugged) do a little mudding and pull a boat or camper maybe a teardrop.
It is a 4x4 with 4.11 gears and automatic (wish it had a manual).
I have no idea where or what to start on although I do read on here as much as possible when not to busy.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thx

Okay I didn't realize the pic would be so big how do I resize it ?
Never mind got it.

with 4.11 gears, you can run 33s without much of a problem. read the sticky thread "lifting your explorer" and you'll find lots of options from 2" to 5".

If you plan on towing, I'd go with maybe 32" all terrains and TT/shackles. 5" and 33s is a little much for a tow rig I think.

look in the 'lifts, suspension' subforum.. there should be a sticky called 'lifting your 2nd gen for under $300' or something like that. great budget lift to help you clear those larger tires and be a little more capable offroad.

lift it, wheel it, love it

nice sport u got there

For what your thinking I'd put some 32's or 33's on it. with maybe a Body lift and a lunchbox locker in it and call it good:thumbsup: Still streetable, yet suprisingly offroadable:thumbsup::D

Thx for all the comments..

Question...
My rear end only has 1 leaf on each side should I do something about this and how much lift should I go with for 32s for clearance and looks both ?

Im putting 32s (well 265's on a 16" rim) this Friday and will be doing a Torsioni Twist and adding shackles so there is no rubbing.

Your sport has a 'mono-leaf', which can easily be swapped out for rear leaf spring packs from a 4dr Explorer. Call some salvage yards, get some 4leaf packs from 4dr and enjoy a smoother ride and maybe another inch of rear clearance. But the easiest way to clear 32s on a 2nd gen is the TT and shackle lift.

I will get some pics of 32s on a stock suspension this weekend hopefully.

I too have the mono. What do you think about a 550# helper? I don't load it down much but Helwig said it will get rid off the sag. Do you think it'll make it ride really rough unloaded? I personally think 550# is mild. Thanks, look forward to the pics.

Oh and is how is the handling after a TT? I did it on a '94 Nissan truck and it was down right scary on the road. The 2nd gen X isn't very sticky as is so any info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running 265s on stock 16 inch rims now.
Original tires were 255s.
I also have 2 inch spacers on the back to fill out the wells.
How much bigger are 32s ?

32s are roughly the same height as a 265

265 what? You can't say a 265 tire is the same height as a 32" tire. 265 is the width of the tire, not the height. The second number is the height ratio of the width, and the third number is the rim size. For example, a 265/45R16 is only 25.38" tall, a 265/75R16 is 31.64" tall. On metric tires, the second number is the one that determines the height, and is an aspect ratio, not an actual height.

On a 265/40R16, the 40 means the height of the tire is 40% of 265 (small sidewall). On a 265/75R16, the 75 means the height is 75% of 265 (large sidewall).

Since I don't know the second number on your tires, I can't say what height your tires are, or how close you are before raising is required.

I have 31x10.5R15 on my Explorer, and I have no clearance problems, and it has given me a 2" raise over the stock tire (235/70R16 = 28.95").

I could clear with a 32" tire, with anything else bigger than that needing a lift. I'm sure the same is true for you since our chasis's are the same.

**I lied about the chasis being the same, you have a 4x4, I have a 2wd. You should have more room than I do.

Okay changing the subject here.
Like I said the truck had been in storage and now debating what to do with it.
Well I recently took it to a local mechanic because of the so called death rattle. The mechanic installed the longer tensioner and told me nothing of what I am reading on here about the sohc so now I am worried about sinking any money into the truck.

The rattle would only happen when warmed up and restarting and would last about 5 minutes.
I thought it was fixed it is now whisper quiet...any thoughts ?

where

can you identify where the rattle is coming from?
I had a heat shield rattle like ball bearings in a blender on my Sport. It was just missing a bolt. It would rattle at low rpm (i.e. idle), but would quiet down once i got the move on.
I'd check to make sure nothing is loose underneath.

ARE you sure its a SOHC 4.0L V6 and not a OHV (pushrod) 4.0L V6??

you can buy my truck, and swap everything over to yours.. including manual tranny/t-case, lockers, and superlift :D

or just do a tt and body lift, and throw some 33's on

This is what I had done Dead Link Removed and it is now quiet but am worried about internal chains..cassettes..tensioners that apparently is a problem on the early sohc engines.

Found this thread also of what was done http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=487634&postcount=33
