Whats up with people hating the sohc

Smooth doesn’t matter much when your truck is waiting for it’s chance to get a $2,500 rebuild. I bet the 4r70w is light years smoother dragging 4,000 pounds.
Eh I wouldn't tow with a 2nd gen sorry would only tow with 6th or maybe if i got 5th gen sorry 200k miles towing nope I got yukon for that reason so Idc about that

Lol wait.

So you wouldn’t tow with a 5.0L pushrod V8 with a 4R70W trans and a Ford 8.8 rear out back in a pickup truck frame, but you’d tow in a crossover with unibody construction?

Wat?

Way better transmission dude! With way better power with way more towing capacity yeah I wouldn't own one to save my life because I don't like all the safety features that ford has came up with but when you have something with over 200k miles on it don't know service don't know how well it's been taken care of you start driving it kaboom you've got a knock or something else

Lol. I won’t own an SUV I couldn’t put a 4,000 pound trailer behind and drive 4 hours. I’d put a load of money on a second Gen V8 outowing any Explorer over a long distance.

The later model transmissions aren’t good, they just aren’t utter garbage like the older ones.

If an Explorer isn’t good as a truck it’s pretty worthless to me. It makes a terrible car. It’s terribly inefficient.

Eh I got my fun trail truck and my towing vehicle that's still a suv I hate the 5th gens and I plus I need to put a little more then that behind me lol

My dad has a 6th gen as a work truck. It’s fast, fun to drive, all that...but I couldn’t imagine towing relatively heavy with something that isn’t built on a truck frame

Eh, I need a little more under me than a garbage 5r55e. It’s not up to any job, honestly.

My 5R55E is relegated to highway duty. It does long trips well, I’ll give it that.

Are 5r55e weaker then the older 4 speed autos that came with the ohv I don't feel they are but
To create a 5 speed they took the 4 spd and activate different combinations of gears. So you are essentially doubling the wear on some parts. Not weaker but a not so great design put under a ton of stress. Fragile bands, servo bores that wear, and flimsy valve body gaskets getting the workout of their life. They also speced a lifetime fluid, but some of those problems may not be fluid related, that is debateable. A trans shop told me a huge cooler and 30K trans OCIs would probably put a big dent in his bottom line .

The 5 speed from 2002, till about 04, that is probably worst transmission ever made .

It’s actually a 3 speed.

I agree with some of the other posts on this forum that in general, the SOHC gets a bad rap. That said, last Saturday my '09 Sploder with the 4.0 SOHC just kicked. Basically, without fanfare, the engine quit at 307k while doing 80 mph down the interstate.

I can tell by the crack in the front of the driver's side valve cover, the timing chain or related parts let-go.

No complaints. This engine was mostly original except for maintenance items (timing chain tensioners, ignition items, etc.) Heck, it still has the original water pump. The most involved repair I had to make was replacing the fuel rail pressure sensor which required removing the intake manifold. (replaced gaskets while I was in there).

Used Mobile 1 with Wix filter (mostly) since 80K and it lost about a 1/3 to 1/2 qt between oil changes about every 5k.

Anyone know what these buggies are worth as scrap or the auto recycler? Good mechanical condition otherwise.

Depends on your area. 3-500 max, typically. Scrap was down pretty good, I haven’t checked recently.

How could that go wrong?

The 5.0L/4R70W is an F150 powertrain. It is nothing like the V6 SOHC. I think Ford Just wanted a 5 spd trans out in the mid 90s.

Gotta look impressive in that pamphlet.

The timing chains in the back of the SOHC was also an Audi design around that time. They actually thought it would be more reliable .

Being that both of those Engines are German, there could be some relation. Probably the guides made by the same supplier:

The 2009-2010 4th gen Explorer V8 models are arguably the best for towing. They have 292hp/315 lb-ft torque, a strong 6R80 six speed transmission and are rated to tow 7,000 lbs with the tow package. It is basically a F150 chassis and drive train modified to be a mid size SUV. The 5th and 6th gens are not built for heavy towing duty. I believe they max out around 5k-5.6k lbs. towing capacity.

It IS the F150 powertrain. Some F150s came with the 4.6L 3V, likely 7K towing capacity. Those type Explorers are very hard to find too.
