Hey all,

What I want to know is, when did the good motors appear in these things, I am told they had GT40 style heads, at some stage - when did this start ?

I am close to buying a Mounty, it's a 1997 model with a V8 and AWD.
It has a bad transmission but I can get one of those easy enough, and for $1000 it could be a deal.

On the specs page it says a a 1997 mounty has 8.8:1 compression and 210 HP. The later ones state 215 and 9:1 is this the different heads >?

96-mid 97 had GT40 Heads and internal EGR
mid 97+ had GT40P heads and external EGR

Just look to see if the truck has the EGR tube on the pass side exhaust manifold. By looking at just the heads the only way you can tell is this:

Some late '97 also had the GT40P Heads.

gt40p is extenal EGR

So here we go, I dug out a pictures I took last week at a junk yard.

So that would be a GT40p headed motor, judging by the EGR pipe stick out of the top of the header ?

The junkyard is run by a bunch of idiots who have no idea what they have anywhere, that one and another 5.0 were sitting around and they couldn't tell me what came from where. That motor may be an Explorer motor as one of the guys there said they'd just crushed one.

I need to go back and see if I can spot a transfer case and transmission.

listen if there is a EGR tube from the passenger side manifold it has P heads, the earlier non p heads use an internal EGR = no EGR pipe visible.

If there is a moderator here, could you please move this thread to the 1996-2001 mod forum ?
I didn't realize I'd posted it here by mistake.

Scruff: Just look at the first picture in this thread. There is a P cast on the corner of the head just outside of the valve cover on the GT40P heads. My '98 X has them and my '96 X did not. The P heads have improved swirl characteristics over the earlier GT40 heads. The chambers and plug placements are a bit different. If I'm not mistaken, there is a small difference in the intake valve as well. (I'm working from memory here, so please be kind.)

The GT40P heads are arguably the best iron non-canted valve heads ever made by Ford for the 302.

I do not know the build date of my 97.5+ mounty drivetrain installed in my 88 BII, this has the P heads, my 96 Explorer has the non p heads.

The p heads do have a P stamped onto the outside of the casting, on the passenger side near the front, I am not sure if the same "P" is present on the drivers side, in my truck it is not clearly visible.

The easiest way to determine is the external EGR tube as discussed earlier

my aftermarket GT40-P heads have the plugs almost straight out the head instead of at an angle.

aftermarket P heads? do you mean you purchased re-worked Ford cast P heads?

And thanks for pointing that out, I had forgotten the difference in the spark plug holes, yet another way to tell the difference

This is another way to distinguish the P heads.

I am not sure of the build date of my 97.5 mountaineer 5.0 either. It does have a stamped P on the passenger side and external EGR. I don't think they ever put a P on the driver's side.

All great info, thanks guys.
Apparently there is also some raised ridges on the backs of the heads, three means non P four means P, but a nice little P stamped onto the head makes it easy as pie.

I am scouring the insurance auctions now looking for a 1997 or 1998 Exp or Mounty 5.0 AWD, preferably thats been rolled over or some other non-chassis bending incident. Low miles would be nice.
I have 3000 to spend, which I know I could buy a shappy Exp of that era with, but I'd rather get a decent low miler with a smashed body than end up with a chassis that needs everything replaced.
It'd be nice to have some money left over to buy some air suspension :-)

Thanks for your help guys

dont plan to have a bunch of $$$ left over hahaha the drivetrain/donor alone around here at auction would be $1500+ depending on miles, and I personally spent another $4500 to complete my conversion, little things will add up! and my $700 headers were a free bie at the time, the Radiator was $550 and the Advance Adapter was $600 plus I had my 4r70w "soft" rebuilt that awas arounf $800. It adds up! there are some places you can save $$$ but when you are putting this much effort into building a truck I could justify the extra $$$, well that an no car payment for 12+ years now :)
Good luck!!

410, I know, I feel your pain. I read right through your conversion page and learned some stuff from some of your pictures.
I probably misrepresented the budget a little.
I have $3000 to buy a chassis, I only threw the air bag stuff in there because that'd be where the leftover of that portion would go if there was any.
The budget for the truck is a lot more open ended, not unlimited, I'm not into wasting money, but it's there.
If I can get the exp with low miles and the right spec list for under 3k I'll be happy.

I spent a lot of time weighing up the options on building a rod, I came to the explorer for a lot a reasons. Getting the AWD and the V8 as a factory package was the big seller, but the little things as you say are what add up and that what makes this option a lot cheaper.
Just a complete axle to axle Mustang 2 conversion is about $2000, then a four link for the rear is about $600-800. THEN you've got fab costs (I can weld but not that well) and an engine/trans before you know it you've dropped 8000 and have barely got a roller.
On top of all that you've got little stuff like brake and power steering lines, a wiring harness fuel lines, gas tank and a whole world of stuff.
The Exp will come with all of that, and I hope to use as much as I can unmodified.
