My dads '94 xlt is leaking water from the head gasket. I was trying to figure out what kind of engine it had, ohv or sohc. It has a 4.0 efi v6 2wd.

I know the vin will tell me what I need to know but does anyone have a link or reference to a website where I can plug the vin in and tell me for certain what engine is in it.

I think, but not 100% sure, its a ohv in there. Is ohv an interference engine as the sohc?
TIA

8th digit

If the 8th digit in the VIN is X then you have the OHV. If it's an E then you have the SOHC. The SOHC is an interference engine. It was not used in U.S. Explorers until 1997. I believe the OHV is not an interference engine.

You have the OHV engine. 245ci, VIN X. Hope that helps!
Also, is it the head gasket, or the lower intake manifold? Mine started leaking water and I was told head gasket. Turns out it was the lower intake! Good luck!

Since the SOHC motor was not introduced until the '97 model year, I think we can conclusively say you have the OHV.

psst, wrong forum

94 was before 95

you technically have a first gen explorer only available with a OHV V6
