Hmmm a driveshaft would be good if it doesn't come with one.

Or i forgot to mention, i could get the rear SOA'd with stock springs, maybe the shackle too. I'd consider almost anything if it meant not paying 600-700 for deavers.

i would stay away from SOA on a "prerunner" type truck. the reason being, the lower center of gravity in the desert the better (especially at high speeds through the whoops) i know you can get a set of custom shafts made by just about anybody who makes shafts, it may cost you.

i have seen this truck on race-dezert many of times, and if you ask me it would be a great start for an offroad race build. you could easily leave it be and have a kick ass off road truck (2wd of coarse). if all there is to be done is 4wd and rear deavers, consider yourself a lucky one as "Prerunners" are known to be expensive trucks to build. as for rear shocks check out FOA (f-o-a.com, they have a variety of different shock options and from what i have read are real nice for a heck of a lot less money.

goodluck

Ya, COG would be something to take into consideration. I think i would prefer to stay SUA for the time being anyway, just less projects to tackle with little time, money, and mechanical inclination to deal with.

Costman, when you say 'it may cost me' for custom shafts being made, are you talking about sleeved shafts or custom new ones? I think sleeved would be the way to go for me, like RJ was saying. And do you know a ballpark price range for sleeved shafts?

not so much for sleeved shafts.

if it were my build, i would stay away from sleeved shafts. i dont think people understand the full abuse of prerunners and how much they can really take. i say do it right the first time on your shafts.

i read somewhere in my huge stacks of magazines and literature on the subject, that you only need one shaft made. if i remember correctly you can use a D44 TTB outer shaft on the pass side. ill look into this when i get home. i believe the pass side slip will alow a D44 to spline directly into it.?

If the D44 shafts work as far as the spline count goes, then it's really no big deal to have them cut to length and re-splined...Currie or Dutchman are a couple places off the top of my head that can do this.

like i said i am not 100% sure on this but in know i have read about something like this done on a longtravel 4x4 ttb set up.

That would be great if that's the case!

haha i am curious why you dont want to get the dixonbros LT kit or AM LT kit for your mounty?

My mountaineer's 2wd, i want 4wd.

ahhh good call.

although your mounty would make bad ass race truck :D

One day, i'll have a badass mountaineer AND explorer :) But until then...

I am re-reading this thread: http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6916&page=4&highlight=ttb+axle

and there it says the D44 and D35 have the same spline count shafts, so i guess that means what you said is true . I would be able to get a stock shaft shortened and re-splined, like DB_1 said. That leaves the driver side shaft though, which i still would like to know how expensive would be to get sleeved/spliced. Is sleeved and spliced the same thing, btw? In that above thread, solo motorsports claims they have run spliced shafts with no problems.

That would be it. you may have to have the axle opening ported a little. But if there's any advice i could give you, it's to pay the money and get the deavers. Nothing will do as much for your trucks off road performance.

Exploder, i will get deavers eventually, i've been planning to for the mountaineer up until now, and that won't change with my next vehicle. I know they are worth their price tag, however high it may be, but i just won't be able to afford them right away.

i would just put down the money on 1 custom shaft. you will be happier you did and will sleep better at night knowing you did it the right way.

Nevermind, i'm stupid :)

the pass side axle is the same on the d44 and d35, except the d44 is 4.5" longer. the driver's side is completly different. im pretty sure ON THIS PERTICULAR truck you need to extend the driver's side axle too. if the driver side beam was extended before the pumpkin (between the beam pivot and the pumpkin) then you don't need any custom axles for the drivers side, just the passengers. but if the beam is extended after the pumpkin (between the pumpkin and the wheel/nuckles then you'll need custom shaft on that side. in the picture, it looks like there's alot of space between the diff and the hubs, so to me it looks like it needs extended axle on the driver side. i think thats the same way paul and winter did theres but i may be wrong.

sprung under would be better for desert running, but you are building a multi use truck for prerunning and crawling. a spring over wouldn't be bad if it was just temperary until you get the money for deavers :dunno:

I think you're right RJ, and i bet that if it is the case that it didn't need extended axle shafts, the owner probably would have working 4wd by now.

In the thread i referenced on race-dezert, SteveG mentioned using the stock D35 passenger shaft on the driver side, and just shortening it a lot and resplining it. But that was in the first ten or less pages of the thread and no one ever mentioned anything more about that. Could that be done? So that way there would be no sleeving of any axle shafts, no compromising their strength.

Any thoughts on this?

RJ, if we made it down to you by about 8 AM or so, would you be able to come? What's speedzone btw, and what time is it?

And where's 410 at?

F*********K!!!!!

The seller just called me and told me some guy checked out the truck this morning and put down a deposit on it, and will be bringing the rest of the money on Monday. If for some reason though it doesn't end up being bought, i'll be the next in line for it. :(

That is so disappointing.
