Very briefly, what would need to be improved with the steering, without going swingset? Sorry if this thread is becoming more of a blog on this explorer than about a specific topic.

Thanks for the tip carlover. I'll try to get a hold of him.

Hey, Brandon here...I have NOT done any 4x4 beam stuff, and my brother Travis has done beams only. He also worked at Solo for a while.

Bobby at solo is probably the guy to go to for some extended axleshafts. They are cut /extended/sleeved shafts that Solo builds...I'm sure if you called Bobby up, he can get you set up for a decent price. I might be able to build you a set of extended ones, too, but since I've never done them before, and I'd have to make some sort of jig to center everything, etc. It would be on a "trial & error" kinda deal (but cheap) but I could not give you a guarantee...just bein' honest here.

The truck overall looks decent, looks like Camburg shock hoops, tranny crossmember & radius arms to me. the beams are home-built? they look good.

im not to sure what to make of this explorer. it seems good, but im not sure its EVERYTHING your looking for. but for the right price it might be a good start. inyour situation, some of the most important things would be

how many miles are on it
what condition is the engine and trans, have they been rebuilt?
how nice is the interior
has the car been beaten/romped/careless with it

since your looking for a dd, these are really important. cause even if it has 4x4 problems, you still need to get to work/school and back. this car being your only means of transpertation.

the whole front end looks pretty dang good. i can't see the welds up close to really know, but form the pics everything looks nice  since the front end for a 4x4 prerunner is the most exspensive part, this is probably what your looking for already built. (more important than the back end)

ok next part: extended axles

yes winter and jamie (410fortune) will know the most about this. here's what i know

the cheapest way to extend the axles would be to sleeve them. cutting the stock axles and extending them fitting a tube over the axles and welding em up. alot of dezert guys do this and i haven't heard alot of problems. but if your planning on running a locker in front and driving the rubicon, you probably want

custom axles. chromoly custom axles woudl be the most exspensive and strongest. in the pictures, it looks like the way they widened them that youll need two extended axles, one for each side. (some companies make it so you only need to extend the passenger side) i know 410 furtune used a blank d44 axle and had it cut to length and splinned, which didn't cost too much. i think you can still do this with 4" widened beams. i think you only need to cut about a 1/2" off. but for the drivers side, i don't know about. i never looked into it

but i do know that on the camburg website, for the coilover 4x4 system it states "Add $1500 for custom axles" but that cumburg, so im sure they had to charge for the bragging rights for the bro's

your going this sunday? if you want i can probably tag along and check it out too. two heads are better than one, yeah? as long as i make it home in time to go to speedzone :D

oh yeah, also make sure it has tires you like, and make sure they're in good condition/not worn out. cause damn it sucks to buy tires.

we should run a list of what you would need after you buy it. its not geared in the front, but is it geared right in the back? casue front and rear gears + install is $900? (i forgot what we payed, but i remember it was $250 a diff to install) plus the cost of any limited slip you might want in the front.

deavers for the rear - $600

shocks for the rear - used set of 2.0's $250 or 2.5's $400-450

gears- (don't know)

roll cage -anywhere form $200 homemade to $4000 from a shop

spray paint for the front end!

can't really think of anything else right now

but you would have to figure out how your gonna run the back end.

Wow RJ, that's a lot to take in at once. Haha, that would be great if you would go on Sunday, my dad is sick at the moment but he would like to go too, so three is better than two!

In response to your first post, it has about 150,000 miles and as far as i've been told engine and tranny have not been rebuilt, but run solid and strong. The owner's words, "the truck hasn't been beat up real hard offroad." And the interior looks really clean, all intact. I think the driver seat leather is worn pretty well, but that's to be expected having been driven everyday since 1993. It's got a stereo and sub too :)

I also read a couple places that camburg axles are not sleeved or anything like that, they're brand new with top of the line materials, which brings the cost up, as well as the camburg name. I think the biggest stress to be put on the front end would be trails like truckhaven, i don't plan to run the rubicon anytime soon. Possibly moab too, which i know is the most likely place to break axle shafts. But i am not going to dictate which vehicle i buy based on moab.

As for your second post, it has 33" procomp AT, which aren't my first choice but i can live with them, and they appear to be in good condition. He's also throwing in some 35", which i can sell for some extra $$. The rear is geared to 4:56, which is what i would choose myself, and there's some type of LS too, not sure what. I was also thinking i would try your gear guy because he seems to know his stuff and his prices seem right, which is more than i can say for the last two i went to . As for the rear end, i wouldn't get deavers right away, they're far too expensive. I'd most likely run the shackles on there with some 4" superlifts. And I don't know what type of shocks are on there, and i'm undecided on what i'd run anyway, maybe just some cheap procomp es3000 or 9000? The roll cage will have to wait for an indefinite amount of time, either whenever there's another building party, or just whenever i could afford it. That's not way on top of my list either. I guess that covers it all :) I'll get back to you on Sunday, but i'd like to go as early as i can wake up, so i don't spend all day driving. Thanks for all the help everyone, keep the suggestions coming :p:

le tme know when you plan on leaving/returning and i'll see if i can make it

to bad this guys eems to have stoped replying, the second page he says he has a rear shock hoop 16"shocks, prp seats, and a new motor.

haha i had stock shackles and an add-a-leaf with 33's. we finished putting together the front end and i wanted to see how it looked. so i put the wheels on and all we had in the back was th aal

don't you dare get superlift springs!!!!!!!!!!! you saw my post, how long ago was that? and they're already bending and saging and causing crazy axle wrap!!!!!!! today i put in stock overload springs to try to help the axle wrap a bit . maybe if you can find some skyjacker springs?

but if you di get it, just get mark (maniak) to do his spring over and buy his OME springs and warrior shackles

Or i forgot to mention, i could get the rear SOA'd with stock springs, maybe the shackle too. I'd consider almost anything if it meant not paying 600-700 for deavers.

What truck are you talking about here? Is this about that ranger? Cuz the pics of the explorer i've seen, there's no rear shock hook, no prp seats.

sorry, i forgot to paste the url

http://www.dezertrangers.com/vb/showthread.php?t=53182

he doesn't have pictures of the rear shock hoops or the seats installed. does have pics of the seats by themselves. it doesn't really look that great from the outside, but it seems like it has potential. but the guy hasn't replied in long time.

oh yeah about the steering in the car your gonna look at, yes swingset steering is ideal, but he has steering hooked up for it and im sure it works ok. there's plenty of people running stock style steering. its just not as good as a swingset or single swing steering. im not trying to argue with any one, just saying the steering he has on it will work. i mean im running drop brackets with stock steering and a drop pitman arm and i deal with the bump steer  im sure alot of other people on the board are too. i know a few poeple with long travel i beams and stock steering. they run it and it works, but of course they alwassy talk about abuot getting new steering. whatever i do to my explorer (navajo) im gonna run stock steering, cause i don't have $2700 for autofab swinger steering

O i've seen that thing tons of times, he's got at least 5 different for sale threads for it. First off, i don't want a manual tranny. Second, it just looks a little rough for me. It definitely has plenty of potential though.

And i agree about the steering. I am presuming he's got it extended at least to match the beams. But if the only other option to what's on there now is swingset, then i'm just not gonna worry about changing anything.

haha yeah it looks silly. but hey its got coilovers, full glass, new engine. it had an auto trans, so it be made an auto again.

maybe it just looks like it has alot of drop travel, but its just those small wheels throwing us off

Hey Froader, where's Winter at?

Bummer.

Hey NODNARB, could you give me a rough estimate for what you would charge for some extended half shafts? And what you would guess Solo would charge, i mean a few hundred or over a thousand?

And anybody else, since i am new to the TTB arena, i know little of what's inside the beams. Besides the half shafts and 4:56 gears, would there be anything else i would need to get the 4wd working?
