Not a direct swap, but has been done.

They are both sec gen I have no clue what year trans is in my 99 or my 94

96 with V6 engine has a 4R55E, 98 with V6 engine has a 5R55E. Four speed vs. five speed. They are very similar but the electronics and supportive programming are different.

Read the door jamb sticker and decode it, I believe you will find otherwise. Best wishes.

@drdoom
Reason I thought of that was, my first 5-speed auto is my present 2004. When I got in to test drive it I noted the strangely-different shift markings: P-R-N-D-3-2-1. There was one too many! BTW, ever seen the old, original GM Hydramatic layout? It went, if memory serves me right, N-4-3-2-R. No Park position! When I tore the thing apart, I saw that in "R", with the engine not running, the transmission was locked up by a giant spring, which placed it in 2 gears at the same time. During operation, that spring had to always be released by hydraulic pressure, or the car could not be moved. Learned the first strike against GM engineering with that one! imp

Well I have to say I have never seen one of those! I would be a bit perplexed if I did. Interesting tidbit no less :)

You obviously received your "vehicular indoctrination" after I did. I cut my teeth on Ford stuff in the 1950s, just as the trend towards performance was building. Those countless hours lying on my back under a vehicle in the cold winter of Chicago, were they worth it? Only to the extent that I have never, EVER, paid anyone to do any kind of repair whatsoever, on one of my cars. The cost? One marriage, the worst cost of all. Now, in the twilight of my existence, my second wife agonizes over the questions of what will she do to keep wheels running, when I croak? imp
