Let me start by saying that I haven't personally done either of these jobs, but changing out an engine has to be more work than changing out a tranny (or fixing the t-case).

That said, a 4-door Explorer will give you far more versatility in the long run, so don't just think about your needs today. This is pure speculation, but it would also seem logical that the Sport may have less cargo area. Either way, simply accessing the cargo area is much, much easier with the back passenger doors.

Of course, all of this assumes that both vehicles are in otherwise equivalent condition (in terms of mileage, rust, other issues). Since you know the one with the bad head moves, you have less of an unknown with the running gear I mentioned in the prior post.

Good luck!

Mike

b4 you decide on anything just remember that the sport is around 10 inches shorter overall and has a shorter wheelbase, lets you maneuver easier. I recently completed a 1589 point turn in my 4dr on an abandoned service road, if i was in my sport i would have been out of there in half the time. People wont think youre a soccer mom, people wont want you to take them places bc of the hassle of crawling into the back seat. thats why i drive my sport so much when im not going to work.

seriously though, look at which vehicle has the better body, the better interior.. a trans or tc swap is much easier than an engine swap. take a look at the gearing in both trucks, you might want to swap some stuff over to the vehicle you keep.

on a side not, i just watched Village of the Damned with Christopher Reeves and the town in the movie had 89-90 Bronco II police vehicles! awesome!

I think it's just the sport for me at this time. The guy selling the 4dr didn't accept my offer. He is trying to sell the thing for way too much. He said it has new tires with 95% tred left on them that are worth more than my offer. I told him they aren't any good without a running motor to turn them. Oh well. So back to the hunt for a working transmission. There's a guy locally selling an automatic transmission for a V8 GM for $200 obo. I thought about doing the conversion but all the parts I would need are way more than my budget. Back to the drawing board.

I would really like to find a complete vehicle that has the manual transmission and swap it out. But until then I am going to get a used A4LD in the mean time.

I agree, changing the trans is easier than the engine. If you switch engines you need to worry about all the emissions stuff which differs year to year.

while you have that bad tranny out make sure you do a couple things.. change the rear main engine seal and put a new front pump seal in the trans you put back in. i wish i would have changed the rear main in the used motor i put it, now im too lazy to pull it back apart.

If you decline on the X mmmm i'll be glad to figure out a way to pick it up. 200$ is not bad at all and if anything part it out on here i'm sure all the parts will be gone in 3 weeks and you would have made back more than 200 :)

I picked up my 92 X for 500$ 3 yrs ago, dropped new tranny, suspention, and all new brake equiptment the first month i had it. since then It has cost me next to nothing to keep running

Cool, thanks for the input I will make a note of that. I think the tranny will get a new pump seal because it will more than likely get rebuilt before going in. But I will make sure to mention the main engine seal as well.

Thanks!
