I was walking through the junkyard yesterday getting a new armrest for the Ex when I came upon a few old Yota's with stock front towhooks. Do you feel these would be adequate recovery hooks? If not for my Ex, do you think they would hold up fine for my friend's YJ? Can't beat the price if they really hold up. Not to mention, I have been pulled out of a mudpit in my Ex by just one Yota towhook before.

I don't have a picture but they are pretty beefy. I have been pulled out in reverse by just one, so I know they can hold decent load.

any towhook should be able to hold a decent load. Specially one on a vehicle. Imagine the lawsuits if it wasnt strong enought to pull something out and broke.

the hooks themselves are fine. Their mounting location from the factory is not adequate at all. Get some new bolts and bolt them on. They will be fine.

In terms of mounting location, waht would you guys reccomend. I have seen people mount their hooks horizontally claiming it provides for a better approach angle, however I am still curious.

it really dont matter...

yeah, as long as they are bolted in securely and in a way that the tow rope/chain doesn't slide off, you're good to go. just fyi they are only about $15/pair brand new and come with bolts.
