I finally got the Ex tuned this weekend; James drove out Saturday and we got to it. Turns out I am about to max out my Lightning MAF, so when I retune in the spring for 12psi I will have to move up to a SCT BA3000 meter. The truck ran great, only ran into a few issues- I blew a coupler off about 1/4 mile from the house, and then I blew oil all over the engine bay because of a faulty PCV valve. I stopped by the parts store and got a new PCV valve and a one way check valve and it fixed that problem. We ended up having to drive to I-55 to do the 2nd gear pulls because it turns out my truck will do 80mph in 2nd. We also had some issues with my brand new Xcal 2 datalogging, so James did a warranty claim on it and I upgraded to the Xcal3. It...
I've been around the forum and haven't seen it anywhere. Does anybody know where I can find all of the torque specifications for the explorer 5.0? I need... Lower intake bolts Upper intake bolts Elbow to upper intake bolts Throttle body to elbow bolts Coolant elbow to lower intake bolts Timing Cover bolts Water pump bolts Valve cover bolts Oil Pan bolts Oil pump bolts Oil cooler mount bolt I have a Haynes manual and it has none of these in it that I can find.
You turbo guys probably already know this but check it out anyways.... I got this from http://www.smokemup.com/auto_math/turbo_size3.php Turbochargers 101 This article is intended to help understand the selection of a turbocharger for your car. Whether you plan to change a normally aspirated, NA, car to turbocharged or to change, upgrade the factory turbo to a bigger unit. The article assumes you have a basic automotive knowledge. To properly size a turbo for your vehicle you need to determine the airflow requirements of the engine. The best way to determine the engine's airflow is to measure it. Unfortunately most people do not have the ability to measure it. Therefore we do the next best thing and calculate it based on...
Go go gadget flame suit :D Has anyone ever done a Chevrolet LS series motor swap in their 2nd gen explorer, or any gen explorer for that matter? I know it is a popular swap for fox body cars. Links or pics would be appreciated. The google didn't yield much. I saw a thread with an 01 sport, but the project didn't appear to get anywhere. Thanks! (Edit) - This turns into a build thread... Keep reading.
I finally got off of my lazy butt and started tearing KBX down for its phase 2 stage of mods I have planned for it. I took a vid but way too busy/lazy to post it. The whole front end and hood are pretty much torn off and I just dropped the radiator out. I should be pulling the engine tomorrow if my schedule allows. A lot of interesting things going on with this stage of mods. After this stage of mods are completed I should be able to lay down some pretty respectable power finally; along with some good ET's in the 1/4 mile. So far the additional mods that are sitting in my garage are: *VT built 4.6 Billet shortblock *Kenne Bell 8 rib swap kit w/ 2.75" snout pulley *KB 8.5" crank pulley (20psi boost) *New adapted fenderwell...
alright guys, here is the deal, my local shop told me that i need a plan of action for my engine build (they are helping me for a grad challenge high school thing)... soo the plan currently is... (2003 ford ranger 4.0 SOHC manual, with JBA shorty heads, K&N CAI, and straight pipe) grab an engine stand of craigslist and a heater for the winter :( scrap a old motor out of the junkyard, have one in mind.. 2003 4.0 SOHC with 83K miles....600$ good for that? im gonna try to shop around, but i really want to see the engine run before i buy it, i guess thats just me though AND WOULD A 4.0 explorer engine bolt right up?? Looking for the 300rwhp range im gonna take it all apart, get someone to hone it, port the heads, get some...
Hey guys whats going on i was looking on this site called Morano V6 Racing i think thats what the web address is called also. Well they specialize in Ford V6 performance mostly the mustang 3800 but also the 3000 Vulcan and even the 4.0L. Ok i was wondering since no one makes a charger for the SOHC would a stroker kit that costs like 3,700 be a good idea for performance or would it even work on my SOHC. The site says the kits work on engines from 80 i think to 2003 so i think it should work. SO please any input would be welcome. Thanks guys and gals.

Hello, Let me preface this post by saying that this is my first ever post in a forum, so if I'm doing something wrong, let me know. This thread is a follow-along of the build for my 1994 Explorer XLT 4.0 OHV. I just figured that other 1st gen enthusiast, like myself, would enjoy seeing my unique approach to building my 4.0 to be an extremely capable daily driver. As for the truck, I purchased it in Seattle, WA for $1000 with 150k miles on it. At 200k I managed to blow the head gasket while playing in the TN ice storms... That's an excuse to upgrade! (or just rebuild, as far as my wife is concerned :D ) I bought a second engine from a buddy, and away I go! (First post, so I'm testing this out with a picture) "No officer, I...
This isn't for a truck but for my 1994 Cobra. What started this build is when I broke another rocker arm and bent another pushrod. It was the second time that it happened. The first time was about 20,000 miles prior. With 90,000 hard miles I figured the cause was weak valve springs. So I pulled the heads and and while I had them off ported them. I then took them to Pacific Engine and had them machined and a valve job done. While doing so they discovered that AFR had way too much spring pressure and that some of the springs only had .500 lift before going into coil bind. My cam with 1.7 rockers has .530 lift so it's surprising they lasted 90,000 miles. Here's the broken rocker. Here are some of the porting work I did on the...
I have a '99 X w/ the 4.0 SOHC with 150k miles and may need to replace one of the cams. I couldn't help but wonder if the use of the 4.0 SOHC in the Mustang has led to someone making performance camshafts that will also fit my X. I would be interested to hear from anyone that has swapped out their stock cams and is happy with the results. Also curious if the cam swap would require any other mods (computer, etc.). My X is a daily driver, so nothing too radical is desired. Thanks.
