Interesting phone call today!!! But first the history.

I recently installed a 3" BL on top of my 2" suspension lift. This put me in the market for 33's. I have a set in the garage, but they are not what I want, and they are 13.5" wide which just causes to many rubbing issues for me to trim away. How do you cut the chassis itself

Any way I am not a fan of Les Scwab's Open Country tires, so I was left with few options I like. After calling and running all over town I found that only 2 chains were willing to install 33's on an explorer regardless of lift. Sears wanted a huge amount of cash for tires, and as I said Les Scwab has no tire that interests me. After getting rejected too many times I called Discount Tire. The guy I talked to agreed to fit the tires for me after a bit of haggling and placing a special order. But, when I get there the manager meets me at the door and refuses to serve me. I was a bit pissed and drug him out to the parking lot to demonstrate the amount of room I had for tires (really I wanted to show him the room under them :D ). He didn't care and asked me to leave. I went back in and rolled my 5 BFG M/t's up to the counter and got out my wallet. The manager came running and refused to even sell me the tires knowing that I would have a small local shop mount them for me.

At this point I was seeing red, mainly due to his rude manner :D. I came home and ranted for a while then sent the corporate office a complaint (this was Monday Night)
Today I get a call from Doug who claimed to be the vice president of quality control for the Pac West region. He was very apologetic, and confirmed that this was the policy for 91-94 Explorers, however not for the second or third generation trucks. We had a long discussion regarding the Firestone lawsuits, and the changes that have been made to the Explorer through it's different generations. In the end of this thirty minute chat he agreed that since the lift kits are available on the market they should not discriminate on tires.

He left me with a promise to research the reasons behind all of this hoopla, and to do his best to convince corporate offices of the need for this policy change. In addition to this he has contacted the store I visited and informed them that they would install my tires for me with no questions, and furthermeor that they would be doing the same for all explorers 95 and up. He said he can't change the ruling on first gen explorers without further research, but will get back to me.

I expect to be denied at places like this, but to get told yes then turned away after special ordering the tires was just too much. Hopefully this will actually go somewhere, and we can all get tires at Discount tire if we choose to.

Now my personal debate is should I go back to the store and rub it in there face, or should I say screw them and order my tires from tire rack for my "f-250 superduty"

Hope it works out. Keep us informed.

And it's reasons like that If I where to ever buy tires at a tire place I would just order them and then bring in my old tires/wheels to have them done. If they ask what it's for tell them you have an old truck thats just for offroading and isnt street legal.

The tire shops around here NEVER hassled me.

I deff vote for rub it in his face, now normally I would say no to this approach but when you rolled the tires up to the counter and he still wouldn't sell, OH MAN I would have sharded my pants !!! Buy from tirerack and tell homeboy to stick his tires where the sun dont shine ;)

This is one of those times were automotive stores want to play games, so play games with them. Some dumbsXXts are out there to screw you over.

Have a buddy or your wife or something go in there and buy the tires, and say you need them for your boat dock, or you are going to use them for tulips in the yard :D

Even the Ma and Pa shops around here wouldn't actually install 31's on my X, but they would mount them. That was fine since I had a floor jack but WHY don't they? Order from TireRack.com. You get excellent shipping prices and much better tire prices. Remember, the tires are for your '94 Jeep Cherokee ;)

My friends around here have never had trouble with getting larger tires mounted. I was going to get larger tiers on my X and the store even tried to figure out what size would work good with a 4" lift(the lift is coming one day)

I bet 4 Wheel Parts would mount them for you.

Its not that hard.... put it up on jackstands and have a friend with a truck carry the wheels up to the shop and have the tires mounted. Ive done it several times. I know it sucks, but no need in shopping around or jumping through hoops when you can just take them off yourself.

That was the plan untill he got under my skin.
Home and a couple beers later I found the e-mail address and vented a bit. Guess I get to see how long it takes him to call me back and shut me down LOL.

LOL ^^^ That a boy :D

Just buy the tires and be-friend someone who works at a garage.. or in my case since my boss' other venture is a car lot, I just take my truck & tires over there and borrow the machine and do it myself. Probably cost me a bit in gas since he's about an 1.5 hours away but afterwards, I get to play around with his other cars.. Too bad he won't let me touch his really nice cars.

He left me with a promise
I got a feeling that my half full can of D. Coke in the fridge is worth more than that promise! ;)

It IS cool that you will get your tires though! And yep, I would have to do a little face rubbing when I got them!

Elliot tire Kirkland

Remember Ryan Arsoul used to work at Elliot Tire in Kirkland. Now he works at Goodyear Corp. but I bet his former co-workers would appreciate your business.

PM him and ask.

Getting thirsty :D

I would go back and rub it in his face. Get the tires installed. When you go to the counter to pay afterwards, change your mind and say you dont like them. :p Make them take them back off and go get them elsewhere. :D

I'm not quite that cruel, but it would be fun.

In reality I am just taking the rims in to a different store to avoid the potential tension and get a better price. Poor explorer has to sit on jackstands for a few hours :(

For me that means a bit of a drive.

I only know of a couple that carry tires and both are 1/2 hour to an hour away.

Discount tire will get my buisiness, just because they are seriously cheap in comparison with every other tire company I tallked with in the greater Seattle area (at least on BFG M/T's). I am just going to leave the X at home so I don't have to deal with the crap. They can mount them for me to put on my "trail rig" if they care to ask.

Basicly they want 135 a tire and that includes road hazard, mount and balance, valve stems, etc.

Their cheapest competitor was 4 wheel parts and they want 149 for just the tire, plus a possible shipping charge if they don't have them in a local (oregon) warehouse.

I wish Toyo would hurry up and release the new Open Country M/T in a 33".
The O.C. A/t's are a waste of money IMO, but those new M/T's look bad ass.

Why is it that Les Schwab has absolutely no concerns taking care of me, but everybody else does???

Well except Sears, but they really don't count. 1900 dollar qoute for 5 mounted and balanced. I almost choked, then made the Sears rep look it up again. Me still thinks they had to have made a mistake, but he claimed that was the price. Gotta be wrong, have you ever seen a 33 of any type go for over $300 each? Crackheads, that's the problerm with Sears.

Oh well, it's too bad that there are no 4x4 shops there. They salivate at the chance to sell tires... :D

Perhaps it is time for one.

Otherwise, it sounds like Seattle is living up to its yuppie liberal perspective - all coffee and no action. Here in Louisville, they would wait in line to sell you tires - anywhere...
