MOAB EXPLORER EXTRAVAGANZA 2001

The first trail that they finish is the Alpine Loop. It goes from Silverton to Lake City to Ouray. They then hit the secondary trails that branch off from that. As far as the famous Black Bear Pass that goes from just above silverton to Telluride that one is anyones guess. I hve driven that in early may one year and not been able to drive it in early june the next.

Teri is right about the trail being cut int the snow drifts. I have a pic somewhere of my old Nissan driving between two 25 foot high walls of snow!

WHICH TRAIL???

I have heard that the trails are owned or maintained by different people or groups, so they try and out beat each other on who is the earliest to get open, Black Bear or the loop.

I don't know which will open first usually it is the Alpine loop. And of coures it will depend on the aount of snowfall. Here is the info for the Silverton chamber of Commerce

And here is a link about the various trails

I hate 4-Runners

hey thats double whammy! I did that in my Explorer! :) I was the first to do it too! woohoo!

Riff,
If you go to the home page and click on the Explorer bookstore, then click on books and type Moab in the search by keywork. This will take you to Amazon.com and selection number 14 is the book you want to buy. This will tell you all about the trails in Moab. It has very good discriptions of each trail, how to get to them and how long it will take to do the trail. Don't leave home without one. If you go to Amazon.com this way, you will be helping Rick and this site out, so please go there through this site.
There is a really great writeup that has pictures of Moab and the trails we did Moab2000. This should give you a idea of what you will see when you get there.

Here's a picture of Rob "GOFAST" Robertson doing double whammi, which is the same place that the 4Runner is at.

I can let the others beat you or we can take your little Explorers under your name away. Which do you prefer? Dead Link Removed

As far as trails for next year, I vote for Metal Masher, Steel Bender(in the reverse direction), Elephant Hill, and Top of the World(taking the left hand fork first)

Hahahaha....good one Ray

Oh and Riff, you'll be doing circles because something on your truck broke again.

Hell's revenge is a cool trail, lots of mind tricks and its super easy to get lost. We did it in our pre-run with a guide, I don't recall if they did it during the real run, I had to leave early due to a fauly explorer. The trail itself isn't TERRIBLY difficult but theres a lot of spots where you feel tippier then you actually are and other cool illusions :).
