BMXking's Axle Swap 1st gen. Coils/Radius Arms!!!

Thanks for posting info on seats. I understand about the way u feel about the CF seats. But I did notice that they are 10 pounds lighter for both. I may just go that route.

I think I'll still get the heavier ones. It might be that way b/c it is more comfortable w/ more padding. :D

Haha, thanks Dustin. :D Part of me wants to say, whatever, I'll just get some rock crawler rims and some used 35s and run that with 3.50s up front, 4.88s rear (no front d-shaft until regeared) and open front, mini spool rear. But the other side of me says just wait til I can afford the ARBs for the front and the rear, and get nice rims and tires. I think the "do it right the first time" side is winning. :D

I'm buying some front 4.88s from Dejello on Friday or next Monday. Also, my parents are finally gonna order those buckets this week...hopefully  I found a guy who will do my rear gears (make sure they were installed right by the previous guy) and install the ARB for 100 bucks. He's also installing the front 4.88s and ARB for 150.

Dude, screw gearing the front and sutff. Get that **** under there ASAP.

Sorry Josh, I don't have to listen to you. You are the one that is dumb enough to buy a Dana 30. :p Really though, I'd rather pay ATLEAST the 100 for the rear to be checked for proper installation and the ARB installed so that I know it's street AND trail ready. I sure as hell don't wanna ruin some gears by driving it and thinking that the rears were installed correctly. I'm also going to buy the front gears, but I may just install the axles and then save for the ARB and have all of that stuff installed. It just makes it easier to do it now though since that price only works if the front axle is completely stripped down. I guess I'll just wait and see what happens.

Well, I've found pretty much all of the stuff that is included (and more) in the rear disc brake setups that cost like $300+ plus shipping. I found some Raybestos Dodge 95-99 front rotors (no grinding involved on the 9" axle flange), 79-85 Caddy El Dorado calipers (includes the e-brake) and some pads for it, all for 100 shipped. I'm ordering it tonight or tomorrow after work. :bounce: Then, JasonB and I are going to plasma cut some caliper brackets for my 9" and his rear Waggy d44 under the Sami. After that, I'll need brake lines and some minor stuff and this is pretty much good to go.

Ok, just ordered the rotors and some Raybestos pads for the front off ebay. Ordering the calipers tomorrow after work after they respond and let me know for sure if it has the e-brake. It's crazy how companies can make a "disc brake conversion kit" and sell it for upwards of 300 bucks and I'm buying the same stuff (and more; the calipers and pads for rear) for 100 shipped. :D I'm ordering the 4.88s next week from Dejello.

Hey Bryan!
I'm back in town for a few days, i just read through here and looked at your choice of rims and tires! looks good. Sounds just like what i was going for when i got my new rims. Nice, Clean, Showy, but still useable! Looks good!

I need to post pics of my new setup!

Reggie

looks like its coming along bryan let me know when i can pic up the parts?

Hey Reggie, when you go back, how long do you think you'll be there again? You plan on actually keeping the new wheels for longer than your other ones? :p Hopefully I can get this thing done so we can all go on a wheeling trip.

I will Bruce. I kind of pushed the deadline a bit b/c I want to get some nicer wheels, and also get ARBs front and rear. I get any parts I want at wholesale though, so it's not too bad. :D I'll give you a call when I figure out when it's all happening and let you know where to pick it up at.

j/k bmx. Ready to see it done though.
Oh trust me, so am I. But you've got to realize this was started when I was 17. I'd never even pulled off a drum brake before. My budget was LOW. Now I'm way smarter than I was when I bought the 9" from all of the research I've done. (Or atleast I like to think so :D) Just waiting on $$ and a break from school where I can take my truck out of commission for a couple of weeks.

EDIT: Just bought the Caddy calipers w/ e-brakes for the rear. :D

EDIT #2: Nevermind. I bought them and then later found out that they were front calipers. :( I checked with NAPA and they said that the rears would cost me 146 for both rears, plus a 132 dollar core charge (since I don't have cores) So that is COMPLETELY out of the question. I am instead buying some 25 dollar ones off of ebay (used, but I'll see if I can rebuild them or something) or a set from a junkyard I found that has them for 50, and it's "grade A". Either way I'll see about rebuilding them. Hopefully I'll have all of that stuff ordered by the beginning of this next week. :)

bmxking, great thread! I sent you a pm about a track bar for your swap, thanks!

One of the two rotors for the rear (Dodge Ram 1500). Also, the Raybestos brake pads off of ebay for the front d44.

Today I got a chance to throw on those new rotors and they fit perfectly. I think the $60 was worth not having to grind ANYTHING. I got some longer wheel studs off of an F350 w/ a TTB D50, so I'm replacing the short ones in the 9" with those. If you've ever seen any kind of write-ups on pirate, etc about the disc conversion for the 9", you'd see that guys have to make spacers so that the disc won't wobble on the stock wheel studs. With the ones I'm using, I won't have that problem. I'm using the 20ton hydraulic press at school to put in the wheel studs, and also to press off the shaft bearings. Once I get some new shaft bearings I'll press it all back on.

I threw all of the parts on the shelf because with the deal I'm getting on the regears, I won't be putting any of it back together until then. Made my parents happy to see the basement floor again. ;)

What brackets are you going to use to mount the calipers on the 9"? Or are you having some made?

Most likely I'll be using the JB's (aka JasonB :p). Him and I are helping each other out with stuff and I just got him some rotors (free) for the rear of his and turned them at school for free as well. He's gonna be making some for his Sami when he gets a chance and since he's only 5 minutes from me, I'm going to see if they'll fit my 9" as well. If they do fit, or just need some grinding to fit on there, we'll just make the same ones. If not, I'll just trace out the size and shape I need and we'll just cut it out.

Oh and BTW, I pressed in those F350 front wheel studs on the 9" (which appear to be the exact same as the ones in the front d44) and the rotor fits on there PERFECTLY!

It Looks Like The Brakes Are Coming Along Nicely Cant Wait To See This Thing When Its Done .I Know You Are Thinkin The Same Bryan

any final pictures of the truck?

What are you talking about? The swap hasn't even started yet. :D I'm ordering my wheels this week or so. The radius arms are being ordered as soon as the guy on FSB gives me the final price w/ shipping. The coil buckets are being ordered soon, along with the front calipers, and I'm building a rear bumper w/ hitch, back up lights, d-rings, etc, this coming week! Hopefully it'll all happen soon. :(
