supercharged 5.0 true fire 98 explorer sport

heres a small update o'stuff. not a ton new. i asked james to set the shift points up some (first was 5500, but it stopped pulling way before that) to 5200. seems good for now. i also wanted to take it to gimil this weekend (or if you like viking international raceway, our only track around) and run it down the 1/4 mile, but got busy on sat, today it rained and tomorrow they have not test and tune so i will have to see in a few weeks.
been to a few shows locally, and now that i feel i really have something to show off, i lift the hood. its funny to see peoples reaction when they walk up and not only see a v8 starring them in the face, but one with a blower on it lol! (even had one guy say to me "i just bought one of these, and never knew you could do that kinda stuff to them! i may have to take a pile of pictures, and start looking over my truck now.")
even ran into this guy ($10 if you know who he is)

so back on track of things. cant remember if i mentioned but while i was in carlisle i had bought a set of valve covers, and a bbk 75mm throttle body. they both have been looking at me and i have been dying to put them on. also, andy had sold me his roller rockers that he had on his truck (thanks a again andy! i owe you!)

Picture_004_Medium_.jpg

the rockers wont be going on anytime soon. i will have to wait till i get a donor motor......wait for it.......

Picture_014_Medium_.jpg

BAM!

i have been chasing a former co worker of a friend for more then a year for her truck. i finally got a hold of it. took the motor trans, and rear diff from it. i now have not only a mock up motor for reworking the throttlebody, but this will also be used as a core for a new motor. once again, this wont be anytime soon, but eventually. this is what happens when you buy parts that you know you will have to machine other parts of the motor for them to work. you end up wanting to build a new motor, lol!
also in the little pile 'o' parts is a inner cooler that don was going to use on his truck, till he found a wicked clean 5L from a member on here. that one will be a gut check for me. reason being is i may have to cut the hood

so i had asked my father if he could make a jig for me for the intake elbow. a few pages back i was saying that i am going to cut the ears off, and weld in a new pipe that is larger in diameter to match the throttlebody. the reason why i wanted to put it in a jig was when i go to cut up a pipe, i know exactly where everything lands. that and i will have to send it out to get welded, and it would be nice if they knew exactly where everything has to sit.

Picture_010_Medium_.jpg

and this will be why

Picture_001_Medium_.jpg

see that extra meat inside the throttlebody? thats wasted space. 10mm doesnt sound like much till you compare the two

Picture_002_Medium_.jpg

tomorrow i am going to modify the throttle arm as well

Picture_012_Medium_.jpg

i'm looking at the both of them and wondering if i can some how cut both of them off, and remount the explorer one onto the bbk, and make it look like it came that way using the keyway on it? i will have to try tomorrow, nice thing is i dont care if i bugger up the explorer throttlebody getting the arm off.

oh, one more thing. can anyone tell me if there is a advantage in using the cast alum. oil pan vs. the stamped steel one? the one thats in evil right now is steel, this motor has the alum. one.

Dennis Gage. ;)

No problem Tim. I'm running the cast pan just because that's what came with my engine. I don't really know that there is any advantage or disadvantage though. I know that I wish I had the steel one when I put my engine in though due to needing more clearance around the front axle vacuum disconnect that my 96 had stock. Solution: replace the front axle with a later model one (97 +).

Dennis Gage lol that's freakin awesome! He should do a show with the forum with all you super modded guys!

There aren't a lot of people in the world you can take seriously with a mustache like that. Dennis Gage is one of them.

i remember reading that on your built now that you mention it. weird thing is i also remember jon having that pan and a disco diff. however, now that i think of it even more, 96 was the first year for the 5L, and the last for that diff. all 5L's had awd and i would have to think they didnt have that diff. if i ever came across a 95 96 sport i would be grabbing the front diff out of it because one day i would like to have it so i can disconnect the front when not in 4x4 (which would be 90% of the time). i am however wondering if that pan is a little stronger or not.

Is there any difference on the inside of two? Like maybe pump pick up or anything?

i havent looked yet. i kinda doubt it because it would have to clear the same things. when i go back outside i will have to take a close look at it.

Yea I doubt it to but just a thought. If you got both laying around you mind taking a pic of both, wouldn't mind just seeing them.I never knew there was two, good knowledge;)

yep. two of them. i think in 98 is when they went to a steel pan. i also know if you had a message center from factory there was a boss for the oil sending unit for the console, but none if you didnt have one. wish this truck had a message center, then i could hook mine up.

I have both pans, the steel one came from a donor 97 302. I tried to use the steel one for my 347, but it was slightly warped for some reason, plus it hit the Milodon oil pump bolts. The aluminum pans are very similar inside that I can tell, I easily clearanced the spare one I had to clear the oil pump. I did buy a new aluminum pan to get one with the sensor, my truck uses it. Either should work, but as mentioned the steel pan may be better around the front diff.

The sensor doesn't just thread in? Have this problem with the sohc pan on my ohv, the sohc pan doesn't have a senor:(

Does one hold more oil also? I would think the cast aluminum one would be stronger

I have 2 of those disconnect axle carriers laying around ;) one has a 3.55 gear ratio, the other has a 3.73

My aluminum pan came off of a 97 mountaineer. I called around and couldn't find a steel pan at the time I was putting my engine in so I went for the live front axle. I really wanted to keep that disconnect feature as well but it didn't work out.

Only high optioned trucks would have the low level sensor, the pan for those has no provision for it. They are made for the same amount of oil, and the pans don't add any strength to the engine.

You should get a 302 truck, the parts are cheaper, and more abundant.;)

so i started off with the throttle body today. i was looking at the stocker, and the bbk one and i had seen they both had a kind square opening that they pressed into that appeared to be the same size, and same location. so what i did was ground a little of the top of the stock one and tapped it off.

then compared it to the bbk one. close, not right on, but i was able to line them up using that opening.

put two screws in it, mounted it on the spare motor with the throttle cable. pulled the cable, and it would open to wot. then went to my buddy's place welded it in two spots to lock it in place

cut the remainder off, and gave it a shot of paint

next the elbow

a tad tricky without a vise, but got it chopped up

and that is the reason for the jig. i will try to find a alum pipe in the next few days and start cutting it to the length i need, after i clean up the excess materiel off the ears. i hope i can find someone close by that can tig alum. that is the only thing i dont have access to, and have never welded alum, so i dont want to bugger up the only elbow i can spare without ripping apart evil.

When I made my elbow I made it all from scratch. Looked easier to me than cutting up one.just took two plates, drilled out mounting holes.then matched the large hole to my new elbow and welded them together. Gave me a nice flat surface to weld to.

Here is where I got my elbows and pipe from

sweet! thanks for the link!

yea, i was thinking about just starting from scratch as well. it still may happen however, but not just yet.

They carry the biggest selection of piping and only place I found with cast tight elbows.they have a ebay page also and normally its cheaper on there ;)

I really like the idea of retaining the stock mounting s in the stock positions. Its encouraging that this has been done already, except its being taken to the next level for accuracy.

Great job on that throttle body linkage.
