Engine/trans pulled

i had one from new down right now clutch due to slave cyl. but it was a great truck 18 years only brakes tires thermostat at 110 fuel pump 20 mpg at 50-55 22 long ride on hwy at 75
I know manual ones can see 400k
cleaned the engine bay to make reinstall easier
Good for another 200K+. The only problems I had with mine were mostly rust related.
Last repair was a new fuel tank . The old one looked like the Titanic.
I do think of a manual trans swap. Must be a lot of fun to drive. If I ever see a donor, I'll prob buy the parts.

You are not alone, many of us are waiting on parts....shipping and mail is just really slow right now for some things.
I have the excursion turbo out for rebuild, ordered ALOT of parts for this, everything came 1 week ago except the turbine and shaft...was to be here middle of the week last week? Only coming from CA.....the first three days of tracking everything was smooth....now it just says, arriving late and it has been sitting at the same USPS facility for a week???

Been waiting on headers since May
Windows for the house for 2 months.................. Covid delays the excuse of 2020! Kinda looking forward to 2021 and hope all this crap smooooooths out

I should have paid the extra thousand to have same day shipping...jk haha.
Are the headers for the excursion?
i just replaced all the windows in my buddies house. only 2 week wait for ~36 windows but I use to be a glazier so I had that employee wait time

no headers are for 2000 v8 ranger I am building downstairs for a good dude from Seattle (I have 2 v8 ranger projects in the shop right now)

I'm waiting for Jeldwen windows from the depot, they have screwed up my order so many times it is not even funny.....only 12 windows and two doors..........

Glad you painted. Just wanted to save you from dealing with this, or some random junkyards down the road

I’m trying to replace the oil pan gasket. Forum search is down...how do I get the ears off the old gasket around the backend of the crank

Here’s a pic

with a pick like a dental tool
You gotta get in there and get ALL OF THE OLD material out You can scrape it clean with small screwdrivers a small pick, etc
Use compressed air or carb cleaner to remove the little bits
When you get all of the old stuff out the new gaskets will fit down in there perfectly
I use permatex at all spots where gaskets meet and in all corners, also wherever there is a small gap like where heads meet block, timing cover meets block and pan, etc...........

Thanks! Wow what a pain. The engine will be fine upside down for a few hours yea? It’s dry but back together cept for the oil pan.

yes it can sit like that for however long you need it to, not going to hurt anything

Got a rear main seal from flaps. The forum says the dealer sells a sleeved one but the dealer told me that’s only for new cranks. Their computer pulled the part that is identical to what I got but name brand and 60 more bucks. What do y’all think

that’s the last thing left

you do not need the sleeved one unless your crank is marred up

Only the middle one of my power steering bolts seated fully. Am I missing something or is there trash in the hole. Pulled the thing like 4 times haha

Edit: was missing the mounting bracket haha

Got it 100% complete and wet on Wednesday. Been trying to get it started since.
Battery’s dead so I’ve been jumping it with the ol Camry but it won’t turn over. All the lights come on and and fuel pump primes but when I turn the key they all go off like a dead battery.
checked all the grounds (wiper motor to block, battery terminal to frame, and starter) they are nice and clean and tight. Followed and checked all plugs coming off the positive terminal they are nice and clean and tight.
Checked fuses that deal with cranking they are good.
swapped batteries with the Camry and cleaned wires got it lookin good and still nothing.
the starter can only be wired one way but while I was checking it I noticed it seems like the solenoid ‘cap’ wiggles when I’m tightening the bolts. Maybe bad starter?
What else should I check?
Am I missing a ground?

If you are sure about all the other wiring, I would start to suspect a 20yo starter. You can overhaul them but probably a parts store starter will do. Sometimes cables rot internally, and you can't see it visibly. You have to do voltage drop tests to be 100% sure.

The play don't look good though. It is something that can leave you stranded down the road, even if it does start to work.

I’m about to pull the starter off and look at it.
How do I do a voltage drop test?
I’ve got 12.5V at the battery alternator and starter

good till 10/11

the 03 Ranger SOHC flywheel and clutch is a bit pricey, but WELL WORTH THE EXTRA $100 or so, will way outlast the smaller 4.0 clutch

Dang NOW you tell me! Does the SOHC clutch need the matching flywheel? Or will the SOHC clutch work with a OHV flywheel?

I've always understood the clutch to be the weak link in the system (and the reason the towing capacity is so low for the manual transmission models), so a beefier one would be welcome.
