just a quick question. would a 2000 moutaineer 5.0 motor be a direct swap for a 1998 explorer 5.0 motor? If not, any issues I need to be concerned with?

Should be very close. I can't think of any significant changes in the 5.0 from '98-'01. There are lots of V8 experts on this site that will be able to provide you with more details, but you should be fine.

And just like that, one of those V8 experts nails it. He replied to one of my queries last night in record time. He's a moderator, so we have to be nice to him. :D

The 96-01 302's are all alike, with a couple of differences. You have the 98 return type of fuel system, and injectors. The 99-01 engines use different injectors for the returnless fuel sytems.

For the 98 model, you will need to use your fuel injectors, and the engine wiring harness to match. Just change the fuel rails as a single piece. Look at the injector o-rings carefully. If they look undamaged, you can keep using them. Welcome, and good luck,

Just use the 00 long block with the 98 intakes, fuel rail and sensors as stated above. dont try to swap computer or wiring harness

You can keep all the accessories, heads, and engine from the 2000.

I think that the intake should all be the same from 98-01, the 2000 will likely be cleaner, or have less corrosion. Regards,

the wiring may be slightly different, they may have made changes throughout the years including changing the style of plugs to the sensors.
However yes the intakes themselves did not change.

be sure to drop in a hotter cam before you install it:):)

Thanks for the great advice everyone. Looks like I'll be sticking around this site for awhile. Im quite impressed!

JT, we noticed the something similar with Brett's new 04 Ranger edge engine, he was able to wire up the 2 wire sensor to his 94 harness however (grey/red to ground instead of signal sensor return which is a ground anyway). Also the 04 had a returnless stlye fuel rail so a 97 was used.

What year did they wire the IAT sensor into the MAS?
I know I used a 2000 model year wiring book to install my 97.5 5.0L into my truck and there were a few minor changes, especially in the pin layout on the trans harness, so I would want to reuse all the 98 sensors and wiring with the 98 computer.
