Hey all, so I bought my explorer with 177k miles a couple months ago and the cruise control worked fine then but slowly over time when I clicked the cruise button it will light up but not engage, it started slowly only not working every now and then but it became more prevelant over time and now it does not work at all. Every time I push the cruise button it will just light up for a little bit and never engage. Wondering what it could be, thanks everyone

Do you have the recall harness and switch installed?

Welcome to the site. I know on my 02 it's a common problem for the switch on the master cylinder.

look at your brake master cylinder there should be a red switch mounted to the end of it
Ford installed a wiring harness on this switch with some fuses in it, if the harness is there, the recall has been performed.
Check the fuses and all cruise control related fuses

Replacement harness will have a blue label on it, like this one…

This is the number of the repair kit

If the fuse is ok and there is no trouble code, maybe the linkage is not ok anymore?

Maybe a bad connection at the main plug under the steering wheel cover, can caused by using the steering wheel
high adjustment more often.
In some cases the clock spring 1L5Z-14A664-AB
was be the responsible part.

If it’s the fancy wheel with the integrated HVAC and stereo controls, a trace on the cruise circuit button board often corrodes away.

If the horn isn’t working, that can indicate the system isn’t getting power
