'11 Explorer Revealed!!

That's the issue to me- the 'reserve' if the towing isn't required, why have it there? They can put a big frame under it, a big engine, get 15 mpg, so the capacity says 8,000 lbs. Then I pull a 2,000 lbs. fishing boat with it when I can be entirely satisfied with a unibody, 25 mpg, and 5,000 lbs. towing capacity. If you need more towing, you can get a larger vehicle. It can't be all things to all people...

To answer the "reserve" question, I will ask. Why buy a vehicle that can go over 70mph? Why buy a vehicle that has more than 1 seat? Do you always have passengers? Why buy a vehicle with more than 1 door? The "reserve" for me is when I am not moving the boat, I may need to pull something else. Things change in life and I like most can not change the vehicle every time life changes. I understand that choosing a vehicle is a balance game of wants/needs, of fuel economy/power, of price, of size, of etc. No vehicle is going to fit everyone 100% perfect. Would the new Ex be 85% of what I would need it to be. Sure. I was just saying what I would of liked to see out of the new Explorer.

So what do you all think of this? I don't think the styling is bad but I don't think it should have the Explorer name.

I would call it the Ford Eunuch, because really, that's what it is.

I like it all but the front grill. I would buy one for a mom mobile, but not a off roader. For that matter I would not buy any new car for that:rolleyes:

I think we are all throwing stones at the new explorer without seeing it in person. I hated the 02-05's until I looked at one, same with the 06-10. After seeing one in person they are 10X better than what I originally thought. I'm keeping my mind open to the new X. Yeah I'd buy the 06-10 first, but you all have to realize that this is the future of SUVs. GM is going to do the same thing to theirs. By 2012 they want the majority of their SUVs to become Unibody SUVs. This thing is no off-roader, but that goes for all new SUVs, except the wrangler... I think the Old Explorer needs a replacement...The bronco. Then we can have the family SUV, and the Off-roader SUV. :)
So I'm keeping my mind open to this new explorer, I'm not sure I like it 100% but I'm going to look at it in person, THEN make my judgement. Not just talk a whole bunch of crap on it. My X can tow 6000lbs, I never have towed 6000lbs. Probably never will. So the 5000lb max on the new X is about all people need. If you want to tow more? There is an expedition or F150.
The 6cyl explorer has 290hp....This thing would kick my X's ass. The 4cyl would. No 6cyl Ecoboost :( This X is about 17 hp away from the mustang V6's engine.

Wow,first the Grand Cherokee,now this!!

I can understand that things change- but I think comparing a powerplant that will tow every trailer I've owned since I've owned trailers to "well you only need one door- why have more" is a bit extreme. Or going over 70. Or having one seat. C'mon- be real. I was just listing my opinions as well. That's why Ford builds more than one vehicle.

Wow,first the Grand Cherokee,now this!!

If you were referring to the unibody thing, the JGC has been a unibody since it rolled out in 1984...

Here it is! The official reveal of the 2011 Explorer!

Officially, the reveal is at 11:30 EDT, but watch this video for a sneak peak!

The 2011 Explorer Reveal

Not one rugged looking individual/vehicle in the video. When I think of Ford trucks, utility vehicles, etc. I always thought of the movie Mr. Majestyk. I wanted a Ford after watching the movie. Even though they probably used several trucks making the chase scene, it's still good.

What a real Ford truck looks like: The Video

The ****pit is all ASAFSDFFSFSDFSGERHTRHDADFAGSDOMFGLOL awesome.

Looks like a Ford Edge on Steroids to me. The Explorer was initially designed for on/off roading. Know, from the looks of it, it's mainly a street only SUV. Don't like it at all.

The 2011 Explorer sets so close to the ground, how are you going to take it off-roading. Might be ok for driving on some small country road, but I wouldn't take it to Moab...

Of all the explorers on the road I'd say less than 1% go off road so I don't think ford had that in mind. It's FWD which I DO NOT like. Seriously, why would you need a V8 when the 6 cyl will smoke it anyway? V8 power isn't the thing anymore and it's not going to be. I think it fits my needs perfect and I'll be adding one of these to my fleet soon pending a test drive. I still prefer RWD but it still tows 5000 lbs.

It's a nice looking vehicle, but it looks the same as every other vehicle on the road now-a -days. The older generations have a uniqueness about them and they stand out whenever I pass them. It would have been nice if Ford had given it some uniqueness to help it stand out, but that's just my personnal opinion.

It's the Ford version of the Prius!

Needless to say, I will be saving my money and buying a '71 Torino instead...
They just don't make 'em like they used to.

I think it's a great blend of new technology, on and off road capability, fresh design, and an incredible interior. Ford is meeting the vast majority of the market with this Explorer. I'll be replacing my '97 with one...

Im with you. I just bought a brand new jeep so Ill be keeping that for the next few years but If I hadnt I definatly would have waited and got an explorer. Probably in 5 or so years Ill replace the Jeep with one of these.

I saw the pictures of this thing in the gian editorial in the USA today, the one thing that cuaght my eye Based of the Taurus platform now who would want to go and do that and still rate it at 5000kb tow rating.

i hate to say it guys, but they built what people wanted. were all not most people, so we dont count

they did the right thing for the currrent market to move units and turn a profit. do you really think 90% of the people who will be buying these know crap about FWD vs RWD or truck vs car based platform?

Look on the bright side, guys...you'll probably be able to get a great deal on a 2010 Explorer. :D

My wife digs it. She could care less what wheels make it go vroom.

Plus, the offroad capable Explorer started the phase-out in 1995.

I see on the website if you build your Explorer, 4wd is available. At least it's not a total loss! And they still kept the "XLT" trim, though they don't have Eddie Bauer anymore.
