1995 - Dora the explorer SAS

I think you may have some problems with pulling with a spool in the back, and a LS up front

Right now, I'm going to gear the front to 3.73's fo rhte time being, run it open, and when I can afford new front and rear moser shafts, eaton and ARB, and gears, I'm going to go to 4.10s, thought about going lower, but not practical for a street driven truck, if it was going to see a lot of trailering, maybe I'll go lower some day,

What size tires are you going to run? You'll get better gas mileage running the appropriate gear size to you tire ratio. I am using 4.88's w/ 35's on my daily driven solid axle swapped sway barless explorer, and my only regret is that I didn't put in 5.13's. I currently get about 13 mpg city/ 18 highway. With 3.73's and 33's, I got about 8 mpg.

FWIW, I was getting 15 around the city with 35's and 4.56's. Even with 37's, I am staying with 4.56's - that's because I am building a 5.0 bored 0.030 over to drop in later this year! Man - the projects never go away :D

the only problem with the spool was that on already worn tires it made the wear go quicker. no adverse handling at all. the tires would chirp and heads would turn but damn did it handle so aweseom offroad. it did not make any difference in the steering. you could turn as hard and as sharp as i wanted at any time... just liked to chirp alot and thats what wore donw the tires. when i finally retire the ex as my daily driver the spool will be in full time. right now ive 170k on the ticker and ive got to make it last to 200k at least (next year at this time)

as far as LS up front im also basing this on experience with riding with other guys. that go everywhere they want to go.

Gabe, have you gotten to take any close-ups of the front end...steering, trac-bar...all that?

If you get some time...when you're not wheeling it! :D

They'd be greatly appreciated... ;)

i will be more than happy to take ill the pics you want but right now im on vacation in VA Beach VA and we took the wife's car:(

btw - i did not hook up the trac bar. i went ahead and tested it without it and ive now put on close to 1000 miles on it, most highway and about 300 interstate with no adverse driving situations. with the leaf springs and stock ex sway bar it handles so smooth. very firm like it was stock.

Thanks Gabe.

ENJOY THE VACATION!!!! :D :D

I plan on going with an ARB up front, and an Eaton Elocker, I saw them for the 8.8 in one of the mags, its a bit pricey, but I want a LSD in the back, with an option of locking,

the eaton is an open to locker.. it doesn't have LS i don't think. i wish they would release that sucker! and the electrac too...

Jason:

The Ford 8.8 ELocker(TM)differential both front and rear axle applications
will be available Third Quarter of this year. We had some delays in securing
quality casting sources for the case that met Eaton's aggressive quality
levels.

We now have the components to supply the robust product that our customers
expect of an Eaton product.

Sorry for the delay.

OK, what is a Ford 8.8 differential front axle?

yeah i wondered the same thing..
i replied asking what he meant by that.

One could always hope he meant Dana 35 but that would be impossible seeing the diff cover has to change for the locking actuater.

i asked what he meant by 8.8 front and asked about the dana35 up front for the SLA explorers and made sure to tell him it wasn't a standard dana35. his reply..

Jason:

I believe the Ford F150 has an 8.8 front axle as do some of the F250s and
vehicles based on these platforms. The Dana 35 you asked about is on our
list but will be at least a year out as we have other designs scheduled
first. (We try to hit the similarly sized differentials first before moving
on so we can use as many common components as possible)

Regards,

Jeff

fx4 f150 uses a IFS 8.8... i think its high pinion and is the same or similar to the new independent rear on teh explorers.
