1996 2-3 flare, no reverse

About Servo Bore Repair

Jamie: I saw this somewhere in a thread somewhere here --- or maybe while I was searching : http://www.northlandtransmission.com/ It is something I am definitely going to look into when I rebuild my 5r core.

I think you are also on the right track with a pressure issue for the loss of reverse. Wouldn't you think if it was a band issue it would be more like "will or it wont"? I only say that because the servo bore issue is as widely known on this transmission as loss of Rev

Bob (For the above post) unfortunately if there was a Pop or Clunk followed by the subsequent loss of REV you have a broken reverse band and you are looking at replacing or rebuilding it.

I sporadically have reverse and still have the 2-3 flare. The slower I accelerate, the less severe the engagement. I was thinking about getting those improved o-rings for the reverse servo and seeing if that would help a possible worn bore. I don't have as much time to work on it as before and I just drive it easy and park where I can pull through....

Jamie, you have had that tranny pan on and off so much that I am gonna get you a set of hinges for Christmas :D

Seriously ^^^^^ check out^^^^^^ the above post if the viton rings don't help. I think those guys sell larger diameter servos - and for sure servo bore repair kits.

I am now able to drop the pan , replace a solenoid or remove the reverse servo cover, put back together, refill the fluid and start driving again in less than one hour. 15 minutes more and I can have the valve body off. It takes a little longer if it is hot, but yes, hinges would be cool!

tee hee......

When you have pulled the VB off each time have you replaced the vb bonded sep gasket? In no then this may be the issue... It is a once-n-done gasket.

I figured it was good for a couple of times as soon together as I pulled it. I'd like to have a reusable one, maybe bonded to the plate. I have also wondered if I could drill one of the holes out in the valve body more to help the shifting.

i don't think they are reusable. There is a post here somewhere about this... I know they are expensive but when you do the viton d-rings pick up a new one. Also get a good quality in-lb torque wrench. the harbor freight cheap-os are a definate no-go. I have a HF and a Sears craftsman in-lb wrench and the HF was off quite significantly compared to the digital Sears one.

I'll try to find that thread about not reusing vb gaskets...

I don't think you can beat my record, removed the transmission pan 23 times including the wonderful bath with it all within 2 and a half weeks and still not done yet. I can memorized those valve body bolts tightening sequence with my eyes close now. lol!

When I put in the viton reverse o-rings, I'll replace the gaskets again. I didn't notice the stretching like those photos showed. Mine lined up real well. I had a craftstmen and HF torque wrench and they were exactly the same, side by side comparison. They both had the same cases and made in china marks. However, the HF ones may be craftsmen rejects. I did compare the torques with both and they were the same.

Gosh, you need to put in the pan drain and side hinges.

Mig welded a drain plug on it last night, for some reason I figured it wouldn't be my last. Too weak to pull tranny out for the third time so taking a break for a few days before deciding to let a shop do it or dive into it myself again. Sorry to intrude, but your post 2-3 flare and no reverse was the exact problem I have with my 95 that started this nightmare and just couldn't resist.

^^^ he he there should be a
'psychosis' section for this tranny... it would make total sense! I feel you!

Daisy, if you get yours repaired, let me know what they find so I can quit chasing shadows on this thing. I feel my clutches are fine. I think the problem is a worn bore in the reverse, intermediate or od servos. If that isn't the case, then I have a pump problem. I wouldn't rebuild without fixing those items at minimal.

I'm waiting on the Snap-on scanner from buddy mechanic, he will not let anyone but himself touch or use it. He trashes Ford heavily because he's a Chevy freak and he will not help with problems on any Ford at all because he just hates them and I have to hear it constantly when he comes by while I'm under the Explorer. Have no choice but to be "nice" so I can use his scanner and tools:D. Will definitely keep you updated.

Did you physically check those int. And OD servos? I will be doing this soon as I am well over 200k and have the same trans but only the 2-3 shift flare.

No, I have not physically checked the int and od servos. I am just living with the sporadic reverse and flare. I may do more this spring with it when I pull it out.

just a quick question for you guys! when you take out the reverse servo piston is it spring loaded?? no one really has an answer for this issue....i took mine off to replace the o rings and all i found was a the servo piston with a worn out end..
