1997 Ford Explorer
HI, I just bought a 1997 Ford Explorer Sport, 4.0 liter, 4x4 and I need to fix a problem. On high speed the overdrive comes on and off, on and off again and again? Does someone know what is the cause of this? Is there a vacum or sensor that can be replace to fix this problem?

Thanks!

The overdrive on-off switch on your gear selector lever, or the wiring running thru the lever to a connector under the steering column.

Remove the small trim ring carefully and the switch -button pops out. You might find a good unit at a salvage yard.

Ok, for your info, I already have a 1995 Ford Explorer 4.0 4x4 from which I can take some parts from, like that switch that you are talking, do you think it could fit?

Could I bypass that switch directly to test?

Do you really think it could be only a matter of switch this problem I have, that the overdrive goes on and off at high speed only?? Thanks for your help

Overdrive

If the OD light is flashing the switch could be the problem or it could be the PRNDL switch on the side of the trans behind the shift linkage.
If it is not flashing You nead to check fluid condition and leval change fillter and fluid if neaded. It sounds like the 3-4 servo rubber is hard and will not hold the band tight against the drum. This happens becouse the cat is right next to it and it cooks. This can be changes from the outside. Two round cups on the right side one is the 1-2 and the front one is 3-4 Pry in the cup and remove snap ring to remove if the rubber is hard or torn replace with new.

Are you saying the trans shifts in and out of overdrive a lot? Or are you saying the light on the dash turns on and off a lot?

No the light doesnt flash at all, at high speed the overdrive comes off and goes back on again, and comes off and goes back on.

have you noticed the temperature guage when this shifting in and out is occuring.

I had one with a bad temp sensor that was causing the same problem. OD shifts out when the temp rises to high.
