1998 OHV Preventative Maintenance

also cant you run the factory tune? (unless youve got power adders, and big ones at that i find factory tune can compensate pretty good for being factory)

@Nate Tidwell I would 100% agree with the others here, EFI is the right way to go. Not only does it self-adjust to compensate for differences in atmospheric conditions and negate the need for regular "tune-ups", but it would come with the donor vehicle and there's (as you noted yourself) many threads that cover the swap. If you want to make it faster, you can always have the ECU reprogrammed to match whatever you do - 60 miles isn't that far, for some of us. Sheesh, I've driven that far on 5 cylinders.

If you go 4R70W, bonus points because that should come with the donor vehicle as well. No experience with the OHV myself, but I hear they're very reliable but don't have much power; if you don't insist on V8 swapping immediately, you might want to just ride on it until it breaks. Do what you like, though - it's your toy, I'm not your dad!

I was thinking if I DO a 5.0 swap, then I might do springs, cam, head work, and some will have to do exhaust work.

^^^^ i liked was it the dart alluminum heads maybe? been a while. good cam tmh and then yeeyee

I thought about that too. Are TM headers worth the $900?
i wish there were other options but TMH are a good attenpt at them, and besides no one makes headers that fit and flow well for these with stang headers fit but alas.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen over 155-160°F in my 5R55E or 4R70W, but I also drive like a *****.

In the winter, my 4R70W struggles to get the fluid over 100-110 on really cold days. Regardless of temp, they both seem to target 130 after a long stint on the Highway. Factory aux cooler, nothing special.

I wouldn’t bypass the radiator unless you no-kidding live in the tropics where it never gets cold.

As for shudder, on the 4R70, a fluid change usually takes care of that. You can try it on the 5R, but there’s always that argument about changing fluid in a high mileage trans. I believe in it, but that’s up to you.

See I was thinking this route to due to fact my trans is slipping like a mad man but I like the v6 for gas mileage. Was getting 19 with 31s and a slipping trans so maybe thinking v6 out of an f150 or something like that. If removing the second gasket from the valve body doesn't fix it.

If I do it, it'll be for bonding with my 12 y/o stepson. Otherwise I could just freshen up the old OHV and be done with it. For gas mileage, I get about 37 in my daily driver. I haven't really driven this explorer yet, since it's not insured or registered.

bro metal reinforced guides, aluminum stat housing these things would goo forever very seldom do i hear of anything like burning oil bottom end issues without major mistreatment. same with 5r do VB upgrades good TC maybe some beefing up as far as the rest, that would be a good setup too. sad that a trans or probably timing chain has killed many sohcs ii see in the JY.
I just got a full tuneup including replacement of frayed belt for my old 1989 Ford Aerostar minivan that cost me $440 bucks and worth every penny. My mechanic says everything is good, so I would like to see how long I can keep it on the road.

See my other daily is a full size suv that gets maybe 16 in town got love those V8s.

My V8 gets the same mileage as my SOHC. I wouldn’t avoid the 302.
See that's in town highway v8 toast it cause it's 3.08 gears and I believe all together my yukon xl has a handicap cause of the large gas tank.

And c420 if I could find a 302 2nd gen in good running shape I would love it. Awd or not. But now everyone part um out and there getting harder and harder to find.

I think my V8 has 3.27 gears? Not sure. My SOHC is 3.55s.

They both drive very differently. Never thought they’d be so different in terms of power delivery and shifting. The V8 feel much more like a truck powertrain.
