1999 V6 Engine Squeal

After being sure this intermittent high pitch squeal was my alternator, I bought one. Still a problem. After disconnecting my serpentine belt and starting engine, realized it is not the belt or any pulleys in the front of the engine. Squeal seems to be coming from in or around the intake top rear of engine. Any ideas?

It is your camshaft position sensor.

Basically there is an oil drive body where a distributor would be normally. On the top of this sits a small hall effect sensor that monitor the position of the drive body. Not the easiest fix as the upper intake manifold will need to be removed.

If the engine in question is a SOHC and it is indeed the sensor, it can be removed in less than a minute.

EDIT: if this is a SOHC engine, it is unlikely to be the camshaft position sensor as the sensor detects a mark on the left camshaft itself. There is no intermediary device or drive between the camshaft adn the sensor.

Mine is the OHV and was a bit of a pain for them idiot ford techs

I just quickly browsed your thread on the sensor dreamr and it wasnt actually the hall effect sensor itself but rather the pump drive that was squeeling correct?

They were not specifically sure as both parts were very worn. The tech figured that the sensor was causing the runability concerns and the drive body was causing the squeel. Though IMO the drive body becoming trashed probably caused the sensor to fail.

I suppose if it was just the sensor it would have been an easy fix without removing the intake.
