Started fine drove to destination and when I went to leave it would not start
Waited for a few hours and it started right up drove
But would not start until it cooled down
Did that for awhile then it just would not start tested coil tested good changed spark plugs it started once and then nothing check plug boots seemed like they were not on all the way I pushed on them the best I could seems like they are on better than before
Then It started right up two three times then nothing
Let it sit until next day started right up drove about three miles it died when I slowed to turn into parking lot had to push it into lot out of way
It would not start unhooked battery waited rehooked battery and still nothing but a click sound
Hours later go back reconnect battery starts in N but not in park drove it back home 3 miles slowed down to park it it died won’t start
Next day go out starts fine let it run minute or two shut it restarts no problems
Let it run few more minutes shut off won’t restart
Next day same thing
Next day I go out start it no problems let it run 5/6 minutes shut it off it won’t start again
Seems once it warms up a little it won’t start
I say warms a little because it’s 30-36 degrees outside when it warm right now.

Welcome
I'm going to move this thread to the 2nd generation 1995-2001 sub forum for better views.

Meanwhile.
The crankshaft position sensor may be poly and giving bad signal. Simple disconnect, cleaning contacts and reconnect me that fix.
Sometimes tapping it will give love fe to no start engine. If so, replace it.
The coolant temperature sensor may be failing.

The fuel pump . Need to know fuel pressure during no start. Try turning key on and off 4 times, 5th time all the way to start. Does this start engine?

2000 explorer 3 different engines which ones do you have?

How
Many miles?

When you say “won’t start” you mean the starter cranks the engine over and over but it does not fire up

This could be a fuel pump issue
Or crank sensor
Or a fuse or relay
Or pats security issue

Those are most common reasons, there are many others but first we start with the basics

A 2000 model has a fuel pressure check port under the hood, the first thing I would do is verify fuel pressure
Should be around 64 psi with key on

Make sure that when you first turn the key the check engine light illuminates

Also make sure the theft light is not flashing rapidly, the theft light should go off when cranking the starter

I had a similar problem.
You stated it click. When you stated it does not start. What do you mean?
The starter does not crank over the engine?
1. Uses a test light or meter and connect it to the solenoid trigger wire.
the solenoid is mounted too the Fender.
2. Does the test light lite when you turn the key?
If it does, then the solenoid is getting the signal.
3. You could jump the two stud on the Solenoid.
4. Does the starter crank?
The solenoid is one of the most overlook item.
$30 for motorcraft.

2000 has no solenoid. Uses a starter relay in power distribution box.
If engine cranks over without starting, carry on with fuel pump, crank sensor troubleshooting.

It has 4.0 motor it will start now and run short distance 3 miles but then won’t restart until it cools down.
If I start it and let it run Two minutes shut it off it will restart a couple times but after it warms up a little by a little I mean it was 10 degrees without the wind chill this morning.

I could be a broken wire, failing Fusible link or a failing solenoid
