2001 XLT 4WD Lift Kit?

2001 Explorer XLT 4WD
All the "lift kit" threads seem to be pretty old. What is the latest on lift kits for a 2001 XLT 4WD? I'm looking to get more ground clearance and bigger tires. What height, approximate costs, best brands, frame and body, etc. ANY information would be much appreciated.

Superlift or rough country
I prefer the superlift the rough country requires mods to the truck that cannot easily be reversed

Looking at a 98-11 ranger kit and you only use the front.
To match it on an explorer you will do a spring over axle in the rear

Those are your options for a drop bracket lift kit for the ifs

There are also mid travel and long travel ifs suspension systems but that is different from a lift kit just looking to get larger tires for clearance and looks

Did you search any of this? It sounded like you had already searched and was worried it was all old info

If you did you would know that you are going to be looking at drop bracket lift kits from superlift or rough country that are designed and sold for rangers. 1998-2011 ranger. Then you will be using only the front components in the kit on your explorer. And to match the new drop bracket lift in the front end for the rear of an explorer you will convert from spring under the axle to spring over

The same old info is still true today
 






What size tire diameter do you want? What is your budget not including tires and alignment?
I really don't even know enough to answer your questions...
Looking for off-road performance more than looks. Not rock crawler crazy performance, just more practical off-road. Whatever lift kit/tire size combo gets me there. As far as budget, I could stand $5000 or less if that would get a good hunting set up for a few years...

You need to give actual information on what you wish to accomplish. Better off-road could simply be 31 mud terrains and a locker. It might be 35s with lift, locker, regear.

Are you doing the work yourself?
 






my 2c

"overlanders" or those that like forest roads, but its also a DD, basically an all around- TT, shackles (or TT and OME in my case), 31s, and save the extra coin for a lunchbox locker or good LS clutches

want a bit more that can do 90% of trails? (ie at moab, etc) TT shackle 3" BL, or superlift, or rough country front lift and SOA in the back and 33s, 4.56s. (or 410s too since they came factory) (35s are possible with 488s, but will need trimming!) and lunchbox locker


if you want long travel theres stuff like deaver and i believe GFE sells a long travel IFS kit too.

overall, for your 5k budget, id go with the rough country and SOA, 33s, 4.56, and lunchbox locker

not sure what labor is like for these, but parts wise

SOA- 50
33s- 1.5k???? tire prices vary ;)
4.56- with labor here its like 2k or thereabouts parts wise maybe 500?
lunchbox locker- 500

this adds up to something like 5k



my setup is TT, OME leaves +shackle and 31s. works well for everything i do, which is mainly wheeling for the sake of going places, not to go over the tallest rock, but to get to fishing spots, service roads, etc.

lunchbox lockers are basically drop in lockers. normal selectable ones require setting of backlash etc in the diff. lunchbox ones replace the spider gears in the carrier, so it saves on labor and cost there. i would guess w/ labor a powertrax no slip would be about 800, but a selectable with labor maybe 1500. the only disadvantage is compared to a selectable lunchboxes lock when power is sent to the wheels, as opposed to selectable, which you select when they are on.

as far as ground clearance, lift, whether suspension or body will not get you there. they only raise the body, frame, and/or engine off the ground further. the lowest point (the axles) will stil be at the same height if you dont put bigger tires on. thus bigger tires are what ive you clearance, not necessarily lift.

if you dont want to rehear, i wouldnt go above 33s, but even 33s and the stock v6 is sort of anemic. without a re gear, where i would go for a daily driver would be 31s or 32s, torsion twist, shackles or OME leaves, and then either nice limited slip clutches or lunchbox locker

also 31s (or 32s) TT shackle and a good LS or lunchbox locker should be sufficient for most of explorations of forest roads, fishing spots, or in your case hunting spots. i dont see it being an issue. if anything id go that way and spend the extra money on gas insurance or sliders or bumper etc for your rig ;)
