THANKS TO ALL WHO POST HERE... I didn't have 4 x 4, no lights on dash either. I read the posts and ordered a new control module. I figured they would find nothing wrong and I would be wasting money anyway. I picked up a repair manual and it didn't lend any help at all.
ordered module from Y2K.com $170.00. $188 with shipping.
Part received in 6 days installed in 10 minutes(pull the entire bracket and the back screw is accessible) problems are gone.
thanks again all

Just ordered mine on rockauto.com 188$ (motorcraft).

no 4x4 at all

My 02's 4x4 wont work at all whether you press any of the 4x4 lo, high, buttons. Is this the same problem your all having or do you guys at least have all four spinning? Cause in Colorado you can't really have a 2x4. If anyone has any idea of what to do can you please let me know.

That's the same issue I had when I replaced my 4X4 module. No 4WD at all. The new module was the fix for me.

non-functioning 4x4 '02 explorer XLT

funny thing, I was reading through the posts here and came across this one about 4x4 issues. after reading this I figured I had better go out and make sure my 4x4 was working... since it's starting to snow here and if I'm having an issue I'd like to take care of it sooner rather then later. I haven't engaged the 4x4 since last winter I'd say. Well wouldn't you know that I click the 4x4 hi button....nothing. I drop into neutral, hit the brake click the 4x4 lo button.....nothing, no lights, nothing in the instrument panel. So at this point I'm rather frustrated having just replace the dpfe sensor the day before, and last week having replaced the connecting rods for the front sway bar A-arm connection. fortunately I had read this post, and I've already ordered the part 1L2Z-7E453-A, should be here in a couple days. hopefully this resolves the issue. I checked all the fuses and all is well. I do have one question. Does anyone happen to have a picture of where it's located behind the glove box? I'm a bit fuzzy on this point, though I imagine once I see the part I'll figure it out. Here's to doing it yourself!

Its real easy , drop the glove box to be upside down (force out the rubber stoppers) and its right in your face , once you will have the part in hands , you will know what to look for, but its in your face anyway. All it takes its a 1/4 ratchet with a small socket (cant remember the size , its 7-8 mm) To remove the module.

Great, thanks for the info. So I hop in ole blue this morning to head for work, and now my 4x4 lo light is on... it's not in 4x4 lo, but the light is on. and oddly my door ajar light has come on now as well. Though is only half brightness. weird. could these things be related some how?

No idea , but on mine , the light AND the 4x4 physicly never came on... Check on the gravel if only the rear wheels turns when you put the pedal to the metal.

Hey all,

Last week we bought a 2002 Explorer XLT, and unfortunately - as with so many of them - our 4x4 will not engage.

I have checked the fuses under the hood, but not the one under the steering wheel yet. However, when reading all your posts, I am assuming that I will be needing to replace the 4x4 module too. There is no clicking when the button is pushed, and the lights don't come on at all.

How easy is this to do for someone like me who is not that knowledgeable when it comes to cars? If I read it correctly, it seems like even I could do it, but just to make sure: it's a matter of loosening a screw/bolt or two, and unplugging the mod, put in the new one, and put it back together again?

Does the battery need to be disconnected before attempting this, or is it enough to just not have the key in the ignition?

Maybe a dumb question, but I'd appreciate the response anyway (preferably relating to the technical part, not the dumb part ;-) )

I'm having this same problem!! We got snow last night, about 10inches, and the 4x4 was..................missing in action. No lights, nothing happened when I pressed Auto, Low or High. I checked, and changed all of the fuses...........so I think I may be having the same problem, as well.

Does this sound similar? I just dont want to get it, and then have it NOT work, KWIM???

HELP!!!

-Jaime

Anybody have an answer by any chance? I read everywhere that disconnecting the battery can actually kill the 4x4 module, but I have no idea if prior to replacing it you need to disconnect the battery altogether, or not... :dunno:

Anyone?

Please?

I replaced my module and the 4x4 still does not work. I was getting the 4x4 hi & 4x4 lo lights blinking abou every 3 minutes while driving, so I replaced the module and now those warning lights don't come on at all but my 4x4 still doesn't work. I don't get any clicking sounds when I press the buttons.

What should I do next?
:feedback:

4x4 Control Module

Just found out that there is a different part number for when 2002 Explorer manufactured.

Part # 2C5Z7E453A is for those manufactured March 02 to Dec 02.

Dealer says that 1L2Z7E453A wont work in these models.

www.y2k.com has the part for 161.

Just a thank you to all who posted in this thread. Ordered my replacement module, went to install it as directed only to realize that the existing wire harness wasn't plugged in anymore.

So piece of advice to everybody experiencing this, before ordering the part take a few seconds to pull down the glove box and make sure your wire harnesses are tightly plugged in. There are two that both plug into the bottom of the module.

Count me as another 2002 XLT with flashing 4x4 lights (3 times) and 4x4 not working. I removed and reinserted the #17 and 18 fuses in engine compartment and this temporarily restored the normal 4x4 function for a day. I've read all of the various posts on the forum and am probably going to buy the control module. I haven't had any recent work done on vehicle to consider as a possible cause. I checked all connections as best I could and no luck. Does anybody have an idea why the 17 & 18 fuse removal caused a temporary fix? I'm going to try it again to see if is repeatable. It may mean something.

Same Problem As Go2Way

I seem to be having the same problem as everyone else. My 4x4 lights flash 3 times every few minutes while driving down the road. When I push the 4x4 High button, it will not switch into 4 wheel drive and there is no clicking noise. I have checked all of the fuses. After disconnecting the battery to check the high voltage fuses, it worked OK for a while the quit again. After reading this thread, I think it is the module.

HEY Go2Way--did replacing the module solve your problem. I like the idea of fixing my own stuff, but don't want to spend a couple hundred bucks and find out it is something different.

Yay!!!!

My module came in the mail on Friday from DirectFordParts.com. I paid $180, the dealerships in my area we asking anywhere between $360 and $425 for the same part I got on DFP.com for $180.
I took out the old module, put in the new one, and VOILA!!! 4X4!!!! WOOT!

I did NOT unhook the battery. It does NOT need to be "Programmed" despite what the dealerships will tell you. I did this all on my own...........and I am a chick.............in 10minutes. TOTALLY worth it to do it on your own, and EASY!! Dont waste your cash!

Thanks to everyone on this thread for your help!!! You guys ROCK!!!!!
