I am looking to buy this 2002 Explorer but it is throwing a P0715 code and shifting hard between 1st and 2nd.

P0715 seems to mean "Turbine Speed Sensor Malfunction"; however, I am not sure how hard that would be to fix/replace on a 2002 Automatic Tranny? I know that in 1997 Explorers that sensor was inside the transmission. Is that the case for the 2002 ones as well?

Thank you...

All the 5R55E's have the TSS inside the transmission on the center support.

Welcome to this forum! The part isn't expensive. The labor of removing the transmission, opening it up (possible rebuild likely at this time), then putting it back into the vehicle is where the price gets high. Check # 7 in my list of useful threads for more information on transmission speed sensors: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157488

Thank you!

Yeah, I figured that rebuilding the tranny while its out wouldn't be a bad idea with 122k on the car... Though I am wondering if it would be cheaper to just drop a rebuilt tranny in there instead of repairing the one it has now.

Any idea about the cost of either options?

You might be better off doing the job yourself to save on the cost of labor (and parts which the repair shops inflate the cost of). A transmission like this might be around $1,700-$2,200 in a shop. Check WWW.ATRA.Com for a local shop which could give you a rough estimate (it's always more after they open it up).

TSS on the 2002 Explorer

Is it a 4.0 engine with the 5r55w tranny? The TSS is NOT inside the tranny. It's towards the front near the bell housing. It's on the upper part of the tranny and hard to get to but going through the engine compartment is easiest. The part costs $19.99 at orielly kragen. Part number SN7142.

2002 Explorer TSS

be careful and not hasty in getting a rebuilt just yet. These tranny's are computer controlled so there are a few parts you want to check out first. When they rebuild a tranny, these are not parts they replace. I've seen people get new tranny's, put them in and still have the problem.

Check:
selenoid block (all selenoids)
replace the TSS
check the servo's.

If the tranny is still working fine and just throws a code, don't fix what aint broke!!!
