Hello all. What transmission would be in my 2003 Sport Trac with a 4.0 SOHC ?

It's the 5R55E, the same as the 97-01 Explorer model you know of. The next gen five speed went into the 3rd gen Explorers, but not the tail end 2nd gen trucks(01-03 Sport, 01-05 Sport Trac). I don't know if the Ranger(98-2011) stayed with the 5R55E for that whole run, but I bet it did. Those Rangers are a great source of font suspension parts, the diff, gears, and some interior stuff, plus the 4.0 SOHC engine and trans.

Ranger from 99-11 has the same 5r55e yes

I say 99 because the 98-05 version of the 5r55e has a second oss speed sensor
So if you were to buy a 97 or 98 5r55e you might not have the second oss sensor which is needed for the 03 sport trac

So 98-01 explorer or mountaineer
98-04 sport
01-04 sport trac
99-11 ranger sohc

All use the same 5r55e

Thanks for the details, I'm not familiar with them like your are, I try to remember some things as I go along.

So the 2005 Sport Trac was the first of the next generation models? Plus I thought the 2dr Sport ended at 2003, did they make a 2004 also? I have a rear hatch glass from a 2003, but maybe it was a 2004. I don't recall, I got it for the wiper in the glass, I should have bought the entire hatch for what prices were then.

03 could have been the last year of the sport? I thought it was 04
The new sport trac came out in 05 which was now based on the f150 not gen ii explorer, these trucks had the sohc or 4.6 and irs instead of the solid axle
I think they got a 5r55s not 5r55e

according to wikipedia jts 03, but im not too sure...

I was hunting a hatch for a while for my northern Mountaineer, until I found out that virtually all of the Sport hatches have the very large moldings on the back, with many holes drilled behind it for mounting clips. I never saw a 2004 hatch, everything stopped with 2003. I quit looking when I discovered they all had so many holes in them, my Mercury came from Milwaukee and has rust at the bottom edge of all doors, and the worst on the hatch. I was looking to keep it as my keeper back then, now it's to be my spare.
