2015 Explorer - Speculation / Fact

There are some Internet articles that think the the lights and possibly the grille will be 'freshened'. These changes, if made, would not appear on an order sheet.

Peter

So Ford would have you order a $45k car that you don't really know what it looks like if they have made some of the changes you suggest?

I don't know if there are changes. Those I mentioned were written up in several different articles. I do find it curious that there haven't been any pictures of the 2015 model available as far as I know. Perhaps the extension of the 2014 model ordering process may have something to do with it. Not sure if anyone has tried to order a 2015 model. Perhaps that too has been delayed. I guess no one will know for sure until they release actual pictures of it.
Edmunds figures the 2015 will be a 'refreshed' model.

2015 Explorer Changes

I just read over the Sourcebook and the 2015 Explorer will not be a Refresh only package and minor offering changes.

MAYBE....?????

Ford’s Explorer continues to prosper in the marketplace, mainly because it’s a true family SUV. Following the philosophy of not messing with success, few major changes are expected for 2015. The size will remain the same, but the front will get new headlamps and a grille with more elegance and more rounded lines. The rear lights will get a new trapezoidal form. A complete redesign is a more likely possibility for 2016.

The interior will still have third row seating with the possibility of accommodating up to 8 occupants. Like most large SUVs, Ford’s 2015 Explorer will have rear seats that flip and fold for added hauling and storage flexibility. As with many automakers, the cabin will use new, better quality materials to create an overall impression of comfort. The instrument panel includes a large touch screen to display and control a variety of infotainment and auxiliary equipment using the latest technology.

The 2015 Ford Explorer will offer three engine versions. First, the standard for base models is the 3.5-liter V6 that produces 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. With fuel economy of 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, it has been an easy choice for most buyers

Ford’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine is another option. It produces 240 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque and gets excellent fuel economy estimated at 28 mpg on the highway. Ford has plans to increase these numbers at least to 30 mpg in the future. What will certainly succeed in the 2015 Ford Explorer will be improvement of the aerodynamics and use of new lightweight materials. It’s only a matter of time until we see Explorers getting 30 mpg or better.

The third and most powerful engine is in the Sport model. It’s a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 EcoBoost engine that produces 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. Front wheel drive is standard and intelligent 4WD with terrain management system optional. All engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Ford’s SelectShift function which allows manual shifting will be standard on 2015 Explorer models with the V6 engine. Explorer towing capacity remains at 5,000 lbs.

Rumors of a Hybrid Explorer for 2015 have not been substantiated and there appears to be little possibility of producing an Explorer in China—but things can change.

If that is the case I may have to consider a lease extension if the 2016 is a redesign or check out the Lincoln MKT or MKC when it comes out.
I've already checked out the new Highlander Limited and it would be on the list as well.

Thats a description of the 2013/14/15, nothing new.

2016 is the year of changes

I wish it had seating for 8 people, not occupants. The 3 dogs in the 3rd row shouldn't count.

The back row is meant for kids unless it is a real short ride. It's an SUV that never had a third row until the most recent design. If you want more spacious seating, you can always get a mini van....

The explorer has had 3rd row since 2002. However the 5th gen resembles nothing of the older models.
IMHO the 3rd row is plenty large for what it is but I'm only 5'10" and I've never had to ride back there long

Or a GM SUV. 8 is not an option in an Explorer, was my point. I have a full size van for spacious seating. :salute:

In addition to those mentioned by alexk, the Limited also has Active Park Assist and more colour choices. I thought I read once that heated 2nd row seats were available but have not been able to find that when 'Building' an Explorer.

Peter

Sourcebook says Heated rear seats are standard on Limited. Don't think they are available at all on the Sport.

Sgt1411. That is what i'm trying to get across....!

One feature I really want them to bring back is the ability to open the glass part of the rear door on the Explorer. They can definitely reincorporate it. Having the 3rd row folded flat provides a lot of storage room but cargo shifts so much. When I park on an incline, the groceries just slide out. In this video, the 2015 Suburban has this feature despite having the rear spoiler which is probably why Ford scrapped the 2 way open lift gate. Shown at 2:20.

While I think the Everest looks ok, I think that would be a step in the wrong direction for ford.

I agree and when looking at the pic from the rear my first thought was that it looks like a Jeep.
