2016 Explorer 4 Cyl Ecoboost Rough Idling

Good day. Has there been a resolution to the idling issue?

I have a similar problem with my 2016 Ford Explorer. When at a stop while in drive or reverse and pressing on the brake, the car starts shaking / vibrating although it does not happen when I'm in park.

I brought it to the dealer and they changed the engine support and spark plugs and did PMS, but the shaking and vibration remains. Now they're saying it could be a transmission problem.

Do you have an insight as to what the problem could be?

Does it feel like it is about to stall when you have the brakes on and in drive? What does the tach show when the engine is warmed up in regards to RPM in that situation?

Hi Peter. No it does not feel like it will stall when it is on drive and I am on the brakes. I don't think it's an idling issue and the dealer confirmed it. They've already changed the transmission mounts and they say the engine mounts are fine. They will check the transmission and advise me soon if that needs to be replaced.

The 2016 Explorer has issues with the throttle body. I don't know if that might be the issue. 2016 Explorer Throttle Body Problems
NOTE: your profile shows a 2016 but the thread title says 2017. Should that read 2016?

Yes my Explorer is a 2016. Thanks for the advise on the throttle body problems. I will look into the thread and advise the dealer.

All - same issue but I will add one key piece that we can use to solve. Mine idles rough at 500 rpm, just started happening after 138,000 miles. When I pop the stick into neutral, idle climbs and the vibration stops completely. Whatever this is, it has something to do with the transmission.

Cliff am having the same problem and the deal has no clue what it is. What did you find with yours. Thanks in advance.

I know its been a year since any activity on this thread, but any resolution on this. updates?

Our 2017 started doing this on Friday evening, just out of the blue. I have an appointment on Monday with dealership. So far, after doing some research, it appears to be a transmission issue. I will post updated tomorrow once I get a diagnosis from dealership.

I just got from dealership and it's a problem with the torque converter, which means they need to replace the transmission. Unfortunately, we are at 63,000 miles so we are not covered under warranty any more. Quoted $6,250 + tax for new transmission.

I contacted Ford customer care about getting this covered under TSB 20-2271 and they escalated my case to truck support team. Hopefully they will make it right and get it fixed under warranty.

I will keep you all updated.

I wish you luck with that. Unfortunately, TSB work is only done without cost if the vehicle is under warranty. One reason I always look at buying a Ford ESP. Perhaps Ford will make a good faith offer of some sort since you are just over the warranty mileage.

Peter

Update.

Ford did not want to help us out because we are out of warranty. Corporate just said "NO".

So I opted to have local transmission shop replace the torque converter and filter, as well as clean transmission entirely (to remove all contaminated fluid, just precautionary. I'm buying all necessary parts and fluid which totaled to around $600 and $800 for labor, +/-$1,400 total. This is scheduled for Thursday 9th and will take 2-3 days to complete.

I will update you guys again once I take it for a test drive. Hopefully this solved the issue. If not, then I will be trading in for new 2022 Explorer ST and getting the ESP plan.

I'm not sure how those items cause a rough idle since the vehicle isn't in motion when idling. :dunno: Good luck and looking forward to your report.

Peter

Ok, finally got her back this Friday. No more rough idle or shaking, problem solved. So, Ford tech was correct about torque converter and TSB 20-2271. I visited the repair shop (Albert's Transmission in Quartz Hill, CA) pretty much everyday. When transmission was opened, first thing we noticed was metal shaving in the Trans Fluid as well in the main module and solenoids. Shop owner did an amazing job of disassembling, cleaning all components, replaced necessary parts w/ OEM Ford/Motorcraft components and reassembly of everything.

She drives amazing once again. You can actually feel more power now when stepping on the gas, more responsive. Going to need an oil change pretty soon, so I scheduled oil change and full inspection at dealership for Saturday 6/25. If shop missed anything then maybe Ford tech will spot it, I hope.
