I have located several engines and am trying to decide on which one. I am one for getting as many of my "Ducks in a row" before starting a job as is possible. Will the engine hoist/Cherry picker that Harbor freight sells lift high enough to get an engine out of a 94 Explorer ?? the vehicle has not been lifted at all it is bone stock. I found a place in Texas that has a 93 4.0 with 38K miles on it for $695 and he has a 120 day warranty on the engine with 6 months parts and labor...shipping 80 bucks...sounds almost too good to be true. is there a list of bad vendors...not wanting to do this job more than once if I can help it....and I will be asking you guys for lots of tips when I start this project. A few of you (you know who you are!) have already PMed me and emailed me offering advise and help and it really means a lot to me...Thank You

first off whats wrong with your 94 engine?

Yes the Harbor Freight hoist SHOULD be able to pull a 4.0L and trans over the radiator support and out of the truck.

I have a Powerbuilt (Cheker Auto special) 1.5 ton hoist I use ($80!!! hahaha it was a floor model and they wanted it gone) I have used it with several drivetrains now, it was able to drop my 5.0L into my BII with 33" tires and a 4" suspension lift, BARELY. :)
The boom that picks up the engine is adjustable for length (also changes the weight from 1.5-.5 ton, as are the legs (for getting around tires, far enough over the engine, etc), with the engine cradle (4 chain thing) and the upper intake removed from the engine you have full control over the position and angle of the drivetrain. I usually stuff these things myself, a 1 man job.

Is there a cummins tool near you? My picker and stand from them was 199 together, 2 ton picker, 1250 # stand.
It seems shipping on this would suck bad.
Any 1.5 ton unit would suffice, I'd say. I'd shop by phone and pick one up locally
Good luck

Oil pump went out

And started a knock. Had oil pump replaced and still have a soft knock, now I have the knock and a sharp ping that comes and goes. The engine is the original with 168K on it. I figure its better to just change it out.

Now shopping for a replacement 4.0 engine and trying to decide between a newer one say 98-00 or trying to find a 92-94 thats in decent shape.

Thansk everyone

If you can do the removal and install in say a weekend, you may be money ahead just renting one,JMO

Renting

You might be right, although I am going to have another summer or spring project. I have a 78 FJ-40 that I have to pull the 2F out and rebuild in warmer weather. So I will need it then as well, I figure I can probbly use it and sell it for half of what I have in it and come out a head. I already havve an engine stand.................just trying to make a decesion now on which engine to buy ......original , or 98-00 newer one and try to make it work ????

I bought a two-ton lift at Pep Boys a year or so ago. I forget how much it was but they go on sale from time to time. It was plenty tall and long enough to pull the engine out of my 4wd Navajo, and out of a 99 F150 2wd. I'm glad I bought instead of renting it just because I didn't have to rush trying to pull and drop the engine back in. Plus I always have some project going...

I bought a 96 Aerostar 4.0 engine with 75k miles and a 60 day warranty for only $300. That price that you got sounds good only because of the 6 month warranty. I don't understand how they would cover labor, because if you paid to have the swap done I am sure it would be close or more than the cost of that engine.

Aerostar 4.0 engine

So you installed the Aerostar 4.0 engine, was it a big deal ?? I have the step by step directions and have changed out two engines back in the middle 80s.......both were front wheel drive hondas and it was pretty easy...just keep things in order and keep up with the bolts. Where did you find the aerostar engine ?? and you put in your vehicle ...any thing strange about the install ??

Thanks

I'm in the middle of putting it in right now. I've got the old engine pulled and am in the middle of transferring parts over to the new one. I have had the usual problems--getting access to the tranny to engine bolts, and dealing with rusted & seized stuff. The only thing specific to the explorer/navajo that I have run in to was a bit tricky getting the engine past the A/C lines because I didn't want to discharge the AC.

Tomorrow or next weekend a friend is going to come over and help me drop the other engine in. I'm sure it will be a pain to get the torque convertor lined up and then again fight with the engine to trans bolts.

I got the Aerostar engine on eBay from a junkyard in Philadelphia. They had it up with a buy-it-now price of $400 but they also had the "make offer" thing on the auction. I offered them the $300 and they took it. I can't find the listing anymore cause it was a few months ago when I picked it up.

I did look around and wait for a couple months to find that deal though. I think the best deals are usually at pull your own parts junkyards though.

Engine choices

Sorry guys and gals, Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays everyone. My 92 EX engine is toast. 233+K miles and I want to drive it again. Crates and long blocks are big bucks, soooo, question is, what vehicle can I get for a bolt in replacement. Swapping intakes is no biggy, but I hear there are some changes like cam position, crank position stuff etc. that would make a swap more challanging? I have access to wreck often and plenty of time till it warms up, just would like input as to what to look for. Thanx ahead of time.

You can use any 4.0 OHV motor up to 2000. That was the last year they used the OHV. I have a 2000 in my 91. I removed the cam possition sensor and replaced it with the drive gear for the oil pump from my 91 motor and replaced all the sensors/wire harness with the 91 sensors/wire harness. Also, if the motor does not have the low oil sensor in the oil pan, you will need to use the old oil pan. If you use the old oilpan make sure you order your gaskets accordingly. The newer trucks used different oilpan gaskets. Dont forget, if you remove the cam possition sensor, you must replace it with the drive gear from your motor otherwise no oild preasure. Also, number each wirning harness connection with a number or letter(Both sides). I did that and had no problems.

i just pulled the enging outta my parts truck with a forklift, easiest thing ive ever done, took me 3 hrs.
