Has anyone here ACTUALLY done a supercharger on a 4.0L OHV engine? Reason I ask, is cuz its looking less and less likely for a 4.0 to 5.0 swap in my '91. I want lots of power in my explorer, but still want to keep it a manual transmission. I hate automatics. How hard would it be to do the SC on this motor, and since this motor has 198K miles on it, I would be rebuilding it once it goes.

Alec had a supercharger on Splat about 10 years ago.

Ok I could ask him about his engine thanks!

A turbo will be cheaper/easier and the 4.0 ohv holds up well to boost. There have been alot of turbo and blown 4.0 ohvs around. I have designed a hotside to bolt a T3 turbo to the ohv and work is underway.

Turbo? How much easier/expenses-wise is it than a SC? Would I have to upgrade any of the internals on the 4.0?

I'm just a fast searcher I guess. :dunno:

Hell I didn't even need to search... I've been around that long that I already knew about it!!! LOL... I didn't see the thread as quick...

No need for internals the 4.0 ohv is a beast. As for expenses well I only spent 200$ turbocharging mine a couple years ago. My setup currently isnt the greatest as I only have a band-aid fmu to compensate for fuel and no intercooleer....but I have had sucess with the turbo. The small t3 is great for low end torque but may be a little small for huge HP. but theres always other turbo sizes out there.

The hotside I'm working on will alow you to bolt a chrysler style T3 to a 4.0 using the stock oem manifolds.

Ok, so what turbo kits are available then? U said you used the T3 kit. How the heck can turbo charging only cost $200? I've heard of people spending thousands of dollars on turbo kits.

OMG that is beautiful! How much did that setup cost ya?

That's a customer's car, 2008 Shelby Terlingua

But what about SC's or TC's for explorers? That's a paxton on a mustang :)

A m90 can be bolted to an ohv with an adapter plate and or a turbo can go just about anywhere you can fit it. My setup still needs a little cash thrown at it as I really need to ditch the fmu and go with a Megasquirt or some tuning software like Moates. An I really need a intercooler

id like to turbo my ohv =o needs more powaa

How good/bad are the stock 4.0 internals related to boost? Would I be able to safely run a low boost SC on the stock 4.0 or would I need to upgrade anything? Decided against the V8 swap, gonna go with boost.

I ran around 11 PSI on a stock bottom end on my 91 explorer a while back. It had 130k miles on it and held strong....no problems with the internals at all.

The transmission, on the other hand :p::roll:

But as far as the motor you'll be fine as long as you make sure it doesn't run lean under boost.

The only option for a reliable transmission is to swap in a T-5 from an `05-`10 V-6Mustang....

Anything else you will break a A4LD or M5OD
