4.0 stroker

is there a stroker kit for the 1st gen 4.0. i havnt had a explorer for a while and i am getting one again. and i dont want to bother with the 302 swap. maybe push it out to 4.6L like they have one for the jeep 4.0

Nothing that I have ever seen. A custom setup would cost some serious cash...

I think these motors have already been stroked by the factory and that's why they aren't high revvers.
 






You're better off supercharging it than trying to see if it can be stroked...superchargers are available, and it will probably cost less to do that than create a stroker kit (If possible.)
 






a 4.0L OHV is alredy a bored and stroked 2.8/2.9L

Building a OHV 4.0L = REALLY EXPENSIVE to say the least.
performance internal parts are $$$$$$ and there really is not a whole lot available besides pistons.

They are bulletproof engines from the factory, not built with performance in mind, but torque and longevity. Supercharging can really make alot of power and the short block holds up well.

Head work is where you will make all the power.
 






i like mud alot. do you see a problem with supercharging and muddin? do they mix?
 






Mud = a naturally aspirated 4.0L with a few breathing mods, a cam, head porting, and exhaust will make plenty of torque to turn big tires. The 4.0L when geared properly will make axle snapping torque.
Much cheaper then supercharging, and you can always add a SC to this setup.
SC + mud = okay but not really needed IMO.

A C4/5 auto and BW 1354 t case would be a good combo behind it.
Gear the axles for the bigger tires and you will be fine.
 






Depends on how big of tires you plan on running. Big tires need a lot of HP to keep them spinning fast enough to keep forward momentum. A belt driven supercharger will give you loads of torque and HP to do that with.

Now my question. Who still makes a SC kit for the 4.0 OHV motors? I was looking for one recently and couldn't find a kit from Procharger, Paxton or Vortech.

Hmmmm, good point...I've also looked for one from Powerdyne and Weiand with no luck. I've seen some Vortech's still around on the web, or you could still buy a Paxton Novi 1000 and plumb it yourself....
 






There was a tread on here along time ago about putting a supercharger from and xterra (i think) on the 4.0 ohv. The guy made a special adapter plate that alowed the xterra sc to be bolted on. Don't know much about it though :)
 






right off i'm going with 34"-35" size. its just that the motor has 200k plus miles on it and i am planning on rebuilding it i want has much power as i can from it.
 






I thought the 4.0 was a bored and stroked 2.6 as came in those old capris
I think the only other motor that grew in displacment as much as this motor did during its production was the small block chevy that went from I beleive 265 ci to 400ci. I dont think it can get bigger. Look at a smaller displacement 3.8 vs vs the 4.0 It dwarfs it. I almost find it hard to beleive our tiny engine is 4.0 liters
 






3.8L = 90 degree block
4.0L = 60 degree block

Makes a HUGE difference width wise.

3.8L = 5.0L small block with two cylinders chopped off, similar to a 4.3L vs 350 Cheby

the Merkur family of Cologne engines are all a 60 degree V
I believe the 2.6L aslo came int he Mazda built Ford Courier

the 2.8L and 2.9L engines also came in Merkur cars

Yeah width wise but the 3.8 heads are huge compared to the tiny ones on the 4.0. I think the physical size on the 4.0 limites its horsepower alot, look at the 2.9 vs 4.0 the horsepower is about the same, the 4.0 just makes more torque, seems to me like at higher rpms the tiny heads cant flow enough air to use the extra displacement. I still like these engines though. Had 2.8 85 ranger when I first started driving and abused the heck out of it and it was great except for a few carburator problems. I think a 4.0 in one of those tiny capries or maybe a pinto would be pretty peppy. :)
