Me and buddy of mine were in a conversation about what I should do if the unthinkable happened and my explorers motor died. And(although it would be a cardinal sin with you lot) I was wondering if it would be possible to swap in an inline 4.0 High Output from a jeep cherokee. I would theoetically swap out the engine, transmission, and ,because I want 4x4, the solid front axle and transfer case(though this is just an afterthought, not necessary). Assume I have a donor truck with all parts.

And because I cannot stop modding things I would do a 4.2L crankshaft stroke to like a 4.6L(roughly) I have done a small amount of research myself indicating a remote chance of me not failing horribly. Also assume I have lots of spare time and the capacity to work with the electrical system(which I do). On a funny sidenote I found out that they use our rear axles as an uprade to theirs. I am not actually planning this just intrigued and in need of debate material. Please don`t count this as treason.

The Explorer WOULD be very capable with the I6 4

But the Explorer SHOULD commit suicide with a Heep motor in it...

if you had all the time and money to do this, you could just as easily buy a nice Heep and build it up instead. now THAT is herecy, i'll be the martyr.

I prefer the ford 4.0, the jeep 4.0 is usually much more of a PITA to work on, the ford 4.0 also makes better low end torque.

Well length and weight would be an issue, but stronger springs (from a sas) should take care of that. Going to take allot of fab work.

working backwards IMO

If your OHV 4.0L takes a dump, put another OHV 4.0L in it, or better yet its big brother the SOHC 4.0L, or even better the 5.0L!

Putting a Jeep drivetrain in there is going to cost as much or more, and require lots of fabrication, the others can be bolted in place

working backward IMO

I second the 5.0 swap. How long is the Heep inline? Would it fit lengthwise in the engine bay?

inline 6 in a first or second gen Explorer = no go

I figured it would take some serious front clip mods, and a lot of firewall smashing. Get a 5.0. Great motors, good trannies, and a lot of hop up parts available.

This is most definatly not going happen(like I really have that much money). Just a theory. Though I do like the turbodiesel idea(theoretically). Besides, I don`t want a Heep to build up. My OHV is treating me fine, for now:D.
