4.10 gearing for better mpg?

its the price you have to pay to live in the best country in the world! and most of the time we take our sled dogs out so they don't burn much.. and going from igloo to igloo is not that far.

Off the subject but I hear Canada got some awesome medical coverage. Is that true?

Igloo? for real? I guess I wonder like how some people wonder about people in Hawaii living in grass shacks. LOL..:D

Boboz1, With your city driving that is a LOT of shifting and wear on your transmission's part. If I were you I would be flushing it about every 20k to be on the safe side.

I would be extremely amazed if your explorer had any gear ratio other than 3.73. As far as I know, 3.73 was the only ratio offered with the 5.0 explorers, at least in the later years.

I know what you mean. I change it at every 10k. You are correct about lots of shifting. I think that is something people here in Hawaii don't really think about. I did not even think about how short our blocks was until gas prices started to rise. LOL...

I think I got the short end of the deal then. I know if it was 3.73 I most likely would not have considered changing gears. That is why the thought came to my mind cause I know it was something odd that I have never heard of before. like 3.55.

You have a point I guess for me it was only an idle problem and then check engine light would go off after awhile so I tend to brush it off not thinking that it could have an affect on my mpg.
I have the new part just still trying to find the time to take it in.

With a timing issue for the PCM you may have the engine running in open loop constantly. That would be very bad for gas mileage all of the time.

Check your gearing by looking at both the door jamb and the rear cover tag. On the VIN tag of the jamb, what is the "AXLE" code? The actual ratio will be listed on the original rear cover tag. Look right next to the mounting bolt, all of the other letters/numbers are not the gearing. Next to the bolt it should read "3 73" or "3L73", best case.

Ahh ok.
I did not think about the engine running in open loop constantly.
I will also check on the the door jamb. What is the rear cover tag? Where is it located?

It's located on the rear axle cover...

Ditto, unless someone removes the tag(discards), they all have it there, usually about two o'clock looking from the rear.
