I have a 96 X 2wd 5.0, 120,000 miles and rear end needs attention. I have 3.73 trak-loc and i just change the fluid on it and noticed the spider gears are pitted bad and the clutches are worn out. I want to put a 4.56 in it, what do you think?
I have 275/55/17 29" tires, some mods,K&N filtercharger, FRPP headers, catback exhaust, and a transgo shift kit. Many more planned for the future.
The truck is a daily driver but mostly city, almost no highway.

That's a pretty short gear for a stock engine-IMO--
you might go to 410's--but man-456's with 29" tires will be screaming on the highway-

Yeah thats what I'm afraid of. But will I feel much of a difference going from 3.73 to 4.10?

...yes, in the old days we run 4.10's on the street...you will like them as you can burn the tires....4.56 would be good for 33-35" tires...you will hate those with 29's...

I am also planning on a higher stall torque convertor, will that matter?

...it is all inclusive on a lot of things put together...how you want your vehicle to perform, motor, tranny, gears, tires...power from the engine to the ground....this is why it is so much better to discuss all these things at one time rather than just throwing money into gears...
...the tranny guys here will be better able to answer your question's on that as they will personally know all the aspects of your tranny...;)

OK, thanks. I'm just trying to do a little at a time and the rear needs some work anyway. My goal is to keep it a daily driver that I can take to the test and tune at my local 1/8th mile strip for some fun. 4.10's does sound alittle more reasonable now but i check the tranny forums too.

I have 3.73's and light them up easy--with a stock tune and only 61 percent of my throttle--

Just a thought-but you might consider the fact that this is about the most desired "street strip" ratio going--

Maybe its just the age of my motor, but it just seems pretty sluggish off the line(for a 5300lb truck) and the only time I spin the tires are when there is some liquid between them and the ground. Thank you guys, this is why I joined to get advice from guys who have been there and done that.

Why not go with 4.30's if you are unsure. Especially if your rims are heavier than stock too. Are they chrome?

Not chrome, but they are heavier, 17x9 cobra replica.

....this thread here is a good place to discuss this...:D ...btw, when i was talking about running 4.10's, i was associating it with my old 351c and my 360 motor's...
...now that you say you are going to be running it on an 1/8th mile track, that shed's some new lite on what you are going to be doing...there are some awesome explorer's on here for that and i'm hoping they will see your post and add some input...:D
