Next up... addressing the CV boot that is slinging grease....

It got everywhere... it even made it on to the door...

From these 2 pics it appears to be coming from a pinhole at the top just below the clamp.

I called several shops to see who could do this locally. The first 3 said they either didnt do this repair or they only do OEM.

Then I found a shop that said they could do it, even after I explained that it is a highly modified 4WD truck.... only to have them call the next day an say... "we will NOT be replacing the boot, the technician says because of the modifications and the extreme angle of the axle that they believe it will tear the new boot."

After I picked the truck up I called 3 offroad an 4WD shops who also said they wont do the repair because they arent familiar with the kit, an one said they only deal with solid axles.

Then I got on the phone an tried to talk to True Travel Dynamics, the manufacturer of the kit.
No one answers their phone😡...

I emailed them to inquire if this falls under their lifetime warranty an also to see about buying a spare set of axles... no response yet.🤷‍♂️

Next I called RCV, the ones who make the axles for the kit. They answer their phone!!!

I spoke with Josh who was great. Josh looked to see if they could sell a complete axle but it turns out TTD buys the parts an assembles them in house so that was not an option. He then looked at pictures I sent an did some digging to find the boot used was most likely this...

BAT-100 Heavy Duty Neoprene CV Boot For Use on Pro 4, 930 Joints & H3 Boot.

I ordered 2 of them on the 5th of September because I like to have spares... I had them sent to 410Fortune. Saturday I removed my first axle with relative ease.

I was so excited about my success I forgot to even look to see if it had a slit or a pin hole💪😁

the only causality was a clip...

It holds this line to the rusty piece. Its held on with a little bolt

I boxed up the axle an added another little surprise box for 410Fortune an got it shipped out Saturday.

The axle arrived at 410s shop monday... just waiting for the boot...🤪

In the mean time I picked up a laptop an made an appointment for the tuner on the 27th.

🤞 I'm hoping to have the axle back an installed on the truck in time to do some remote tuning to fix the hot start an smooth out anything else....

Is there a plastic boot available that would fit?

Well apparently RCV used to have lots of issues with their boots, these new black ones are supposed to be super tough. It is possible that something happened during assembly to create the pinhole??? But I doubt it as I am super careful and never did any welding or major work on suspension after cvs were installed.

The cv axle shop must be crazy these angles are not extreme, in fact the RCV kit pretty much runs at stock angles and the limit straps make sure of that. There is nothing super special about these cv axles except for the materials they are made with and they are 2” longer then stock pieces

What are these plastic boots you speak of?
Some sort of advantage over the rubber?
The hard plastic orange ones? I’m not sure those fit these cv ends? Please if you know something magical tell us! lol

I have the cv axle in my hand… hoping the boot was delivered yesterday or perhaps today… want to get this thing back to Eddie asap! He is so close to being able to enjoy his new ride!

Thermoplastic boots, they are harder than rubber. The orange plastic cups would be cool, but I also doubt it would fit.

Apparently This is a 930 style standard boot, this one made By “RBP mfg”

These axles come apart easy the ends
Bolt together…. I found the hole.
Looks to be a simple defect it’s not a “poke” or stab it’s a defect in the plastic looks to me

Super glad to have found the hole!

Love eddies packaging job
Boot was delivered
Easy repair!

This ain’t no cheapo “rest area” tp either… it’s the good stuff.

Even funnier, earlier Eddie thought we could make one of these work! I said let’s send them to true travel!!

Not the wax paper stuff. It looks like first class transit, riding on pillows.

Cv axle fitted with new boot and fresh grease, new clamps. The new boot is slightly different but was able to make it work. The new boot is way more supple, like soft rubber. The old boot is more like hard plastic?

I sent some abs wire clips along with the package
Also the cv axle now has a circlip?? Not sure why it was missing!!! It’s on there now

Old boot vs new
IMG_2588.jpeg

I was worried at first as the opening are different sizes, but the new piece stretched non issue

Wow, that's actually a big difference between the new and old. Maybe with the more "supple" material and larger size it'll be less prone to work/stress failure (IE: work hardening in metal).

If it fails again, he might be onto something with the plunger.

The differences in the boot is the amount it covers on the large cv flange side of things. I was not happy with the small
Metal band clamp I had used, I was not confident it would hold forever so I picked up a heavy duty cv crimp style clamp before we shipped it out. Axle, extra boot, and and wire
Clips are on their way back to Eddie. I threw an extra clamp in the box just in case he wants to do the other side ;)

It appears that the axle shaft was coming out of the differential look at how the seal was moving around
Perhaps that is due to the missing C. clip
I may be wrong but I think there should only be 1 wear mark
I don't really have a good enough before picture to compare to

Well yeah! Circlip was mia so only the pressure of the boots and length of the axle was keeping it in place for the test drives and run home

Should be good now!

Toilet paper, toilet plungers, soiled and greasy Looney Tunes underwear ? ? ? This is the thread that just keeps on giving . . .

Glad it got sorted - - that new boot looks pretty impressive.

Paul

I knew somebody would see that eventually! Hahaha I get my shop rags from various sources hahahaha goodwill, wife throws whatever old clothes into the shop at any time. ;)

Thread can only go up from here!!

Adds a whole new meaning to shop-performance-related "skid marks" . . .

No sh|t, am I right, or what ? ? ?

So poor Eddie oh man
Truck has had some work done since the last update including a remote tune. Truck was cleared for its first road trip.
Then I get a call, something catastrophic happened 2’hoirs north of Oakland CA. Engine quit suspension making serious noises. Poor Eddie! I’m
Helpless to help him being so far away
I did suggest checking fuses once it was determined it lost spark. Luckily a fuse
Had Blown and that got it running again. But he couldn’t drive off the highway, had to get a tow

Last I hear it was towed to a shop where they found issue with front d shaft and the uca on drivers side was loose

Waiting on pins and needles to hear more….

I told Eddie he’s nuts for going on such a long trip with a truck that just hit the road…
No spare tire, diffs being broken in, all new everything bumper to Bumper and custom

But I also share his excitement and understand the desire to drive!!!!

I had a semi truck breakdown in Corning, CA. Great tacos there and nothing else.

I Lost a tire on the side of the highway outside of Oakland on the early 2000s… that was scary. Sitting on the shoulder of the slow
Lane trying to mount a spare with semi after semi going by in the slow lane… not fun. I was lucky to get a new wheel and tire at the local discount,’got out of there safely.. I was the only “caucasion” kid in that part of Oakland that is for sure

So I really felt for Eddie yesterday, I hope things worked out!?!!!! I was driving on a 4 hour tow when he called so I wasn’t able To be as much help as I had hoped

I'd suggest replacing the fuse with a self resetting breaker. I use them in my semi truck and they've saved my ass more than once. The ones I had fit where the fuse goes but where in an aluminum housing.
