410Custom's builds a 2007 Ranger V8 - custom truck build - Project "Ranger Premier"

It is very odd indeed

Many many 4406 trucks running around here for years and never an issue

You still running a factory runner trans mount @vroomzoomboom ?

We shall know more shortly be there in hours

no sir. when i did my swap, i did what you did and modified the trans x member for a poly foxbody trans mount.

We ran to Seattle
Had t case on the ground in 15 minutes
All 6 tailhousing bolts had sheered ALL SIX!
The tailhousing tried to come off with the t case I had to pry them apart to get clearance
I had used rtv on th to t case gasket
Still had to case on the ground very quickly

No damage to old tailhousing
No damage to trans mount, crossmember, transmission case or transfer case
One bolt was broken 1/4” deep. Quickly drilled out the center while Eddie ran to harbor freight in his wicked ass Holden to get extractors
New style easy out worked first try
Cleaned all surfaces
New tailhousing gasket new t case gasket (no rtv, just a dab to hold gasket)
Everything went back together no issue
I used the new tailhousing just to be safe

Eddie went back out to get some Mercon iii for the t case and a hand pump… I forgot mine

While he was gone I tightened all exhaust clamps, maybe 1/4 turns on some of them the rest still tight
I also adjusted drivers door and fender so he has his fiberglass clearance back

4 quarts of Mercon v in the pan

Then we started the truck for test drive!
Not good
Huge valvetrain noise
Filled trans test of the way
Took for short test drive
Still bad valvetrain noise

Sounds a lot like a collapsed lifter
Engine was 1 quart of oil low on trip to ca and that’s when the noise started
I’m thinking it’s a lifter issue
He’s running some marvel to see if we can get it to pump back up

We booked it back to Idaho made it home at 1230 Am

I just got up
I’m planning a return trip
I will bring pushrods Rockers lifters valve seals and all gaskets…. Let’s see what happened in there! Only thing I don’t have spares of is comp cam valve springs

Eddies homework is to run a quart of marvel and do some sprited test runs see if lifter pumps up
Otherwise I’m heading back asap

It’s pretty nice drive!
Sport trac is awesome at 75-90 mph
Not a single glitch (sport trac has same cam pushrods, etc)

So disappointed to hear the valvetrain noise my heart sank
We were so excited it was an easy repair underneath

Here is the culprit centering ball welded itself into molten metal cardan joint broken

When I first got under the truck I lifted on the t case and the entire tailhousing wobbled I was like “whoa”

First though how the hell did he make it home
only thing holding tailhousing to trans was the mount and the tailhousing has a lip that rests inside the trans case

Old tailhousing no signs of cracks or anything

IMG_2984.jpeg

One bolt broke inside case was super easy to extract. As Brett pointed out to me, once they are no longer clamping anything they are just threaded in no force

How the heck do you pop 6 bolt heads and no damage to anything else? How the??

Went back together just like new
Test drive the trans is really really really good

6 new quarts of Mercon v (valvoline multi vehicle) and a new wix filter in the pan

Truck looks killer with line x and cosmetic upgrades
Stupid valvetrain!! Where is the oil going? Past the valve seals is My guess… we are gonna find out

At least on the 5.0 the heads do not have to come off to change lifters

Let’s hope the weather holds through October so I can get back there

Maybe next trip seafood and a t shirt

Tail housing that was on the truck
No visible anything

5.0 noise

Engine is stumbling has misfire and Holley reads lean at times

I put my ear to oil pan and both valve covers metal extension
It sounded like dead center of intake
Oil pan smooth like butter it’s for sure upper end
Pass valve cover sounded like sewing machine
Drivers sounded like sewing machine but maybe not perfect
With my head directly over the engine it sounded to be dead center up front
That’s where the lifter valley is

Here is a video

Anyone? 302 dudes? Taking bets

I put damn near 200 Miles on this truck before i turned over the keys and that was after all the careful test drives just around the house

Dang.

Not a betting man in this case, something is bent or broken. I had a 2.9 make a similar sound and ran lean cause a valve spring retainer let go. Motor would suck about a quarter of oil up thru the intake for the other cylinders to burn in about 1500 miles. It got about 27-29 mpg.

Have you checked that trans extension with a straight edge, could anything have been on the surface(which I realize should have leaked)? I can't imagine what would break all six of those bolts.

Is the balancer outer ring still where it belongs, can you feel any end play at all?

The engine noise almost sounds deeper, and intermittent, like something else hitting. A collapsed lifter might cause a sound from the valvetrain loose and banging I guess, but it sounds different in the audio clip. How many miles were on the engine, I would not expect a bad bearing?

What kind of camshaft, roller or flat tappet? Flat tappet cams have been having issues with the lifters going bad and wiping out cam lobes.

the one thing i like about the 4406's they are very stout for the v8 trucks. the one thing i hat about them, and ask anyone that has had to place one in the truck by themselves, is the weight. sweet baby jesus, they are heavy, and it all hangs off the tail shaft.
what is the oil pressure reading? does it bounce around? i know its a video, but to me that sounds like rod knock. hopefully i am wrong.

I think when the u joint failed, it locked up and the transfer case took the shock load by twisting enough to break the bolts.

yea, like how does that happen. i have a 4406 behind my trans. both have had god knows how many launches in 4x4 on dry pavement, and track.

im ending my comment here because i know what will happen if i finish my comment.
You've got the 4406? I assumed you had the AWD case. Do you drive it around on the street in 4x4 or just use it for straight line launches?

I'm assuming that it is the regular 4wd (non-TOD) electric shift version using stock 4x4 controls?

I'd planned to pick up one to store in event that I want to revert to part time 4x4 in the future. If you use it for street driving without issue I might have to acellerate that plan. I never planned to do it much, but I wouldn't mind being able to turn off 4wd for burnouts.

Thanks dudes

The engine had 104k on it when we took it all apart and re did it

Comp energy cam is a billet roller cam

I have no idea what grade the factory bolts are

The old tailhousing is straight as the day it came off the assembly line. I installed the new one anyways

It is in the valvetrain for sure I can say that because I’ve heard similar many times and if you were under the oil pan with it running…
Well it’s not in the bottom end

I’m thinking the best approach here may be to tow the truck home to the shop because this repair could get nasty if it’s deeper

We could make a. Additional support for the back of the t case if snapping tailhousing became as issue. However I had a 4406 in my old 96 for 10+ years and never as issue. I’ve run them in several rangers, no issue. I have one in the sport trac, no issue.
Launches on the street with a supercharged 347 and no broken bolts or tailhousing. It takes a violent event like this to break things and in this case it broke the bolt heads clean off… no visible damage to anything else. Even hairline cracks would show themselves on the machines flat ends especially if atf was pouring through them

No atf leaks after the repair and trans is smooth

I really wish truck was closer….. this stinks
That’s a 5.5 hour tow one way and diesel in Washington is not cheap so I’d have to bring some with me. I’m 52 in 2025 so my body hurts after 5 hours in a truck

I also Lose sleep over this stuff I want so badly for Eddie to have a good reliable truck that I built…

And was this enough to transfer into the engine? Rocker arm Bolt, spring retainer? Wrist pin? Who knows
Valve covers need to come off
I ordered valve seals yesterday I have spares for everything else because I have a whole “spare” Comp cams valvetrain and cam setup here
I also have a 98 explorer 5.0 outside 150k purrrrrrs like a baby kitten the kid *****ed timing cover repair and gave up on it

I’m thinking do lots of pushups and neck rolls
Return to Seattle this time with big truck and trailer
Then remove intake and valve covers have a look see
Bring cheap Idaho diesel with me and lots of tools and spare parts

Anyone recommend a good valve Siri g compressor tool that works on gt40 heads and can be used in the truck?
I have a manual one and man my hands and back hurt after 4 springs let alone 16

Last year I bought a new spring compressor but it’s used with the heads on a bench

If the truck is here with me I can address many other issues at same time like the backwards fuel gauge

I’m pressed for time winter is coming but
Eddie is Family to us so….

My plan, plan to pull the heads.

That sound still haunts me since first build 347, 2004. It was number 4 that was hurt. Stethoscope to freeze plug on block areas.
Edit
The actual slap is near the head when it compresses. You wont hear that at the oil pan.
Edit edit.
My number 4 was saved with new piston, rings for all, and re hone. It was .004 larger than others but still in spec to use that bore.

I made a spring compressor that bolts to the head where the individual rocker arm sits. Flat bar with a notch at the end to get the keepers out. It had a 30 to 45 degree bend at the head end and long enough to get good leverage. We would stuff 1/2" diameter rope down the cylinder that we were working on, then we would turn the crank until the piston backed the rope tight against the valves. It worked good.
I couldn't find it in the toolbox to take a picture of it.
