I used the search and it came up with tons on E-fans for the 5.0.....BUT, it was all about people debating which would work and about the ones that won't.

Which fan fits and works with a 2nd gen 5.0 auto...

Thanks

Just measure your rad, and compare the measurements of the e-fan you want to use. No matter what, you're going to have to do some mild fab work to make it work.

As far as used stuff, I believe the Lincoln Mark VIII is a popular fan, as well as older Taurus/Sable 3.8L fans.

Flex-A-Lite makes a number of universal fans. I believe the model 195 (or maybe 295 ?) is the one you want? I might be wrong on the number, it's been a while.

Yes but you have a V6 lol. my clearance is different from yours, it's not really about the size, it's what clears the water pump. Thank you for your input though.

I used a Flex-a-lite 185 black magic fan but i needed to removed the rubber spacers on the radiator to move it forward an extra 1/4 inch and then had to grind down the nipple on the water pump about 1/2 for clearance.

All this was after it was spec'ed out to fit.

So as car guy says there will be some fab work needed if your trying to fit the biggest fan you can in there.

I heard the HHR fan is perfect but only fits the manual 5.0?

An HHR? Prepare to open your wallet and bend over in one swift motion....even at a junkyard, if you can find one.

Again, if you're looking for new, measure your rad, and your clearance to your water pump, and go to the manuf.'s catalogs. I know flex-a-lite also lists depths, as I'm sure most manuf. do. If you're looking for used, same thing, except your catalog is the junkyard. Take a tape measure.

Every vehicle is going to be slighly different. Your rad might not position exactly the same as someone elses. Your motor mount may be worn more or less, or fall somewhere else within the production tolerances. Same on your waterpump, the gasket behind, the thickness of the snout (especially if it's been replaced),etc.....

Actually, the HHR fan seems to be cheaper.. From Rock Auto its < $60. The last Taurus fan I picked up (new) was over $100 and many yards know what it is and charge over $50 for it.

Here are the dimensions for a 2006-2007 hhr fan.

hmmm 4"....I wonder if I can trim it .5"

half inch? dont count on it! You may be able to offset it a bit to help clear the waterpump pulley

sweet! gotta love the intrawebz

thought I read the thread on here already that even with modifying it fits the manual 5.0 but not the auto? can anyone confirm this?

There is no such thing as a manual 5.0. All 5.0 radiators have a trans cooler built in. If you could somehow find an equivalent radiator without built in trans cooler, then the core will probably be smaller.

I really want to convert to an e-fan on my V8 (heck, even my V6. I just dislike mechanical fans in general).

This HHR fan looks like a great option!

Serves me for skippin the first page

well I have a 97 Mounty so it came with the 5.0, This weekend I am going to do a junkyard crawl for an efan to put into the truck. The only issue I may see with the HHR fan in the truck would be the airflow at low speeds but thats b/c it is cooling a 4cylinder as opposed to a your v8. There was another fan that looks and pulls alot of air and that is the fans from the 93-95 Dodge Caravans, usually found on the 3.3 but also on some 3.0, but its a 9 blade dual speed fan used in aid with the tow packages to help keep those motors cool, I know some stang boys that use em. It does take some modification. Last time I looked to buy those new was for $50 bucks.

Also I was doing some research and that same fan from Rock Auto is the same a/m fan used to replace the v6 camry on 97-98. Well at least here they say its the same as the GM part # and same dimesions plus its only $46
