I have a pin hole water leak in my oil cooler/ filter housing. Before I remove I want to make sure that the allen head within the oil filter stud is what attaches housing to block and if so what size allen wrench is it?

I could have sworn that mine is held on by a 3/4" hex head ???

Anyway, This is an expensive part, hard to find. You might want to go with a bypass- filter relocator.

this is how the assembly attaches to your Explorer 5.0L block:

removing the threaded piece that the filter mounts on to will not take the assembly apart.

The assembly also pivots in the middle, I am not sure if you can take it apart further then that but I do have one at home I can look if thats where your leak is coming from.

Man, I was not thinking! The whole adapter bolts to conventional location. Thanks for the info.I just priced item at dealer....almost $1200.00. I am currently trying to find one at junk yard.I have a pin hole size leak and if worst comes to worse I will braze up.Does that sound like a viable alternate?

as I said the part with the water bypass that the filter attaches to rotates!
So basically this sucker is two metal pieces with an O ring from the factory, if your leak is coming from in there I would look into taking it off the block (drain coolant and oil) and fixing it
If you have a hole in the metal itself yes I would think it can be repaired, again off the truck.

If yuo think you can live without the water cooled oil filter yuo can get a simple 5.0L oil filter re-location kit, attach it to the 5.0L block, and re-locate your filter. The nice part about this is you can run a real filter, like the FL-1A which is about double the size of the Explorer 5.0L unit.

You will need a new lower rad hose too.

Similar to what I did on my Bronco when I shoved the 5.0L under the hood.
If you go this route I suggest a Canton billet 90 degree/360 degree oil filter adapter.

I actually have this assembly, an extra if you would like to buy it from me PM me..
I used a 97 mercury 5.0L in my BII and I have the oil cooler manifold in storage.

It is actually only a 15-20 minute deal. EASY

changing the plugs is simple pimple people get all freaked out because they try to change them from on top of the engine, just go around the tire....
