OK, so my 01 ST is currently down cuz of the transmission. In talking with the husband he would prefer to do and whole engine swap and put a 5.0 in it along with the AWD components. One thing we need to find out though is since my ST is a low emissions vehicle we need to know if it is doable. Reason for asking is we live in SoCal and with all these stupid strict smog laws we want to know that if this will be done if it was pass the ref inspections. So any Cali guys/gals out there that have the knowledge please let us know before we go full gunhoe on this project.

If the swap is done right, using a 2001 explorer as a donor, the sport trac will just "think" it is like any other 2001 v8 explorer which passes the emissions testing.

If I recall correctly, a swap is legal as long as you use an engine which is the same year or newer. So, I say go for it.

Then you can swap in a selectable 4wd transfer case once the bugs are worked out.

That's what I was thinking, I do know the from 99-01 are the motor I can use with out having to change anything on the motor. Computer on the other hand I would (I think) have to use an 01 computer from the explorer. I hoping someone out there has done a swap already that live in Cali and gone through the ref and all.

You want to have a whole donor truck parked right next to the swap vehicle. The needed items from donor makes a long list-down to the ignition switch and keys, which have to be from the same truck as the PCM and PATS modules-the theft ( PATS) system is coded to the PCM and control module. It is much easier to work "with" the PATS system then to try to work around it IMO

Is yours a job 1 or job 2? Mine is a job 2 and have had some pats issues.

PATS is an issue for sure - unless you have a tuner, then it can be disabled (NOT recommended).

I am running a 97 computer at this time to make mine run without pats. It does not run real good though, timing is not advancing as they changed it from 97 to 99-01. Going to the junkyard in the morning to try and pull some of the items to make mine a pats a to go with the computer I bought. the guy that did my swap told me what to get but I am not real good with wiring stuff.

Luckily we already have a computer and wire harness so if we get a motor that is not from a 99-01 and it's older we are covered on that. Though if we're do get an older motor, we already know there are things that need to be changed out.

You'll really want to have the complete donor vehicle sitting there throughout your swap. You'll be surprised how many parts you'll need off of it.

If you have the 99-01 computer(same) and the wiring harness, then as said hunting a donor vehicle for the huge number of related parts is the best way.use any

Note that if you find a 98 model with the trans(AWD too) and mileage you like, that will work as well, but it'd need the 99+ injectors, fuel rail, and fuel pump assembly.

The 99-01 is the perfect donor range, the 98 has just those fuel items different, and the 96-01 has different heads/intake/EGR, and matching wiring/PCM items, plus no PATS and no G-sensor(VSS issues for transplants into older cars). It gets much more wiring complicated when you get away from the closest model parts.

Good luck with it, and think hard about not buying an entire donor drivetrain. You need it all, including the exhaust(the front half(manifolds and cat pipes)). Take your time, and get one that seems to have been well cared for, not covered in leak grime and some replaced parts(front belt components example).

We already plan on having a complete donor, its just been a bit hard finding one at a good price range and the correct year range. Though we may have found one for $1000, might be able to talk the price down.

Sounds good. Be patient as the set of parts is one hunt versus lots more time if you have to locate items separately.

You can find out anything you need from here, it's just a matter of searching for it. Glad to help,
